in man s VEHICLE TGY,
i Application filed January 21, 1924-. Serial No. 687,628.
To all whom 2t may concern: w p Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. down, a
citizen of United States, residing at Enumclaw, in the county of Kingand Stateof VYashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vehicle 'loys, oi which the following is a full, clear, and er;- act description. P
My invention relates to lmproven'ients in vehicle toys of the type for useand anuisement of children, and has for its object to provide a device which will not only furnish amusement and pleasure, but will also at the same time provide a source of QXBICISQ through its manner of operation.
A further object of the invention resides.
in the construction of such a device of relatively few parts simply united so as to provide a self-propelled vehicle which will withstand the rough treatment to which it necessarily subjected. Also, the sim plicity of construction renders it a relatively inexpensive toy. I (Ether objects ano advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which, I
Figure l is a side elevation of the vehicle, parts being broken away.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof, also with parts broken away.
Figure 3 is a complete planof the dance. Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4, 4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section taken on line 5, 5 of Figure 2, and I Figure 6 is a detailed View of the rocker elements.
Referring to the drawings more in detail,
numeral 1 indicates generally the vehicle toy which is provided with a single front wheel 2 and two rear wheels 3 supporting the body member at; the front wheel 2 being carried by a steering rod 5 on the upper end of which is mounted the handle bars 6.
It is intended that the vehicle be selfpropelled', and to this end I have provided a bevel gear 7 on the rear axle 8 which is adapted to cooperate with the bevel gear 9 mounted on the rear end of the longitudi' nally extending crank shaft 10. The shaft 10 has a bearing 11 at therear end of the body member and a bearing 12 at the forward end thereof. This shaft isprovided with front and rear cranks 13 and 14 respectively which are connected to, the oper ating member in a mannerto be described;
The operating member comprises a platform 15 on the lower surface of which is mounted a rock-er 16 provided, of course, with a rounded lower edge 17. A channel member 18 is permanently secured to the upper surface of the body member and has upper edge fl9curved on an are similar to that of the rocker member. The member lli is positioned within thechannel member 18 and a pin 20 is inserted through the walls of the channel and the rocker member for holding these GlQlTlQHlLS in their proper position and relation. Figures 4- and 6 of the drawing show the member 16 as provided with an enlarged aperture 23, through which the pin ,20 extends. llhis enlargement of the aperture will permit relative 'lBJlOVcl'llGl'llof the pin 20 curing the rocking movement between the members 16 and 18. Connected to the front and rear ends of the platform 15 by mcans'of the universal joints 21 are the downwardly extending connicting rods 22 which have their lowerends joined to the cranks l3 and l lin any well-known manner. I i In the operation of the device, the child will stand upon the platform 15 with one foot on the forward end of the'platform and the other foot on the rear end thereof, thus permitting his weight to be shifted to the front or rear end of the platform as may be required. I This shifting of the weight of the operator will cause the platform to rock upon its rocker 16 and channel member 18 and, due to the fact that the cranks are diametrically opposed on the shaft 10, will cause thelatter to turn upon its axis, thus revolving the bevel gear 9 and consequently the bevel gear land shaft 8, thereby causing the vehicle to travel inwhatever direction it may be guided, From. the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have devised a toy which will provide both amusement and exercise for children and also one which is composed of relatively few parts which are united in a compact and durable manner so as to withstand the rough usage to i which such devices are ordinarily subjected. In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described what I now believe to be ing the rearv end of the body member, a
i shaft extending longitudinally Qfthe iember, a platform 1 extending longitudinally of the body member and pivoted thereto, a connecting rod joining crank of the crank shaft and the platform, and
a pair of bevel gears operatively connecting the crank shaftand theanle of the driving wheels.-
2. A childs vehicle, including a body member. an axle and driving wheels supportingthe rear end'of the body member, a crankshaft extending longitudinaliy of the body member, a platform pivoted to thebody member intermediate itsv ends, a connecting rod joining a crank of the crank shaft with each-end of the-platform, and means operatively connecting the crank shaft and axle.
A childs vehicle, including a body member, an axle and'driving Wheels supportingfthe rear; end of the body member, a crank shaft extending longitudinally of the body member. a platformpivoted to the body member, a connecting rod joining a crank of the crank shaft witheach end of the platform, a unlversal omt between each connecting rod and the platform and means vo perativel connecting the crank shaft and body member, said means including channel member and rocker secured to the platform and body member, said rocker and channel member being formed with curved edges.
6. A. clnl'ds vehicle including a body member, an axle and drivingwvheels supporting the rear end of the body member, a crankcshaft extendinglongitudinally of the body member, a platform, means for p-ivota-lly mounting? the --p1atform on the body member, said means comprising a channel -memb'er having a curved edge and a rocker member having -a. similarly curved.
edge;-tlae rocker member being positioned within the channel member, a connecting rod joining a crank of the crank shaft and theIplatform, and a pair of bevel gears operatively connecting. the crank shaft and the axle of the driving wheels.
