Description
Patented Apr. 22, 1924.
STATES "PATENT FIGURE WHEELED TOY.
Application filed April 18, 1922.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SABO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and 5 State of California, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Figure WVheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention particularly pertains to that class of toys which embody a wheeled carriage carrying a rockable body member operatively connected to the wheels of the carriage in such manner that as the wheels are turned the body will rock and on rocking the body the wheels will be rotated.
An object of my invention is to provide a wheeled toy embodying a rockable body member in the form of a walking beam and designed to represent an animal having a tail, and having means for effecting positive movement of the tail on oscillation of the body member.
Vith the foregoing object in view, to-.
gather with such other objects as may subsequently appear, my invention resides in the parts and in the combination, arrange- I ment. and construction of parts. hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts broken away;
Fig. 2 is an end view;
Fig. 3 is a detail in vertical section as seen on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a detail in section as seen on the line 11- of Fig. 2.
More specifically 6 indicates a frame or bed which is mounted on wheels 7, there being a pair of the wheels arranged on the opposite sides of the front portion of the frame and a corresponding pair of wheels disposed on the opposite sides of the rear portion of the frame. Each pair of the wheels is mounted on a crank-shaft 8, the crank portion of which extends between side members of the frame and with the cranks extending in opposite directions relative to each other.
Projecting upwardly from the frame intermediate the front and rear wheels is a standard, 9 which extends into a slot 10 formed in the edge of a panel 11 and on which standard the panel is mounted to rock Serial No. 554,600.
yertically; a pivot pin 12 carried by the panel passing through a slot 13 in the standard to effect pivotal engagement therewith. The panel is shaped to have an outline in simulation of an animal here shown as a dog, and pivoted at 14 on the forward portion of the panel is a pair of leg memhere 15, there being a leg member arranged against each side face of the panel and affixed thereto by a single pivot pin. A corresponding pair of leg members 16 are attached to the rear end portion of the panel by a pivot pin 17. The lower end portions of the leg members are connected to the cranks 8 so that on rotating the wheels and the cranks turned, the leg members will serve as pitmen to effect oscillation of the body member to give the latter a walking beam motion, or act to drive the cranks and wheels on imparting an oscillatory motion to the body member.
The rear end portion of the panel is formed with a slot 18 as shown in Figure 4 into which extends the end of a tail member 19 engaged by a pin 20 carried by the rear leg members, and which pin extends Y through a slot 21 formed in the tail member. The lower edge of the slot 18 is formed with a protuberance 22 which constitutes a fulcrum on which the tail member seats and acts when the leg and body members i turn relative to each other on the pivot pin 17 to cause the tail member to have a vertical swinging movement relative to the body member thus giving the appearance of a dog wagging its tail when the body member is rocked.
The operation of the invention is apparent from the foregoing. it being seen that the pivotally mounted body member 11 being connected to the wheels 7 by the leg members 15 and 16 any oscillation of the body member will act to drive the wheel and turning of the wheels will serve to rock the body member, and that turning the rear leg members 16 on their pivot pin 17 the pin 20 will coact with the protuberance 22 to effect rocking movement of the tail memher.
I claim:
In a toy of the character described, a wheeled carriage, a panel pivoted to rock on said carriage, a pair of leg membera a,
pivot pin connecting said leg members to said panel, operative connections between the leg members and the Wheeled carriage adapted to rock the leg members relative to the panel on turning the Wheels of the carriage, said panel having a slot located near the pivot pin, a tail member one end of which is arranged in the slot and is ful cruinecl on one edge of the slot, and a pin carried by said leg members engaging said tail member whereby on turning said leg members on their pivots relative to the panel the tail member will rock relative to the panel.
JOSEPH SABO.
