WHEEL TOY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,629, dated September 6, 1881,

Application filed February 7, 1881. (No model.)

T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. NELsoN and PHILIP H. WEADON, ofAleXandria, county of Alexandria, and State ofVirginia, are joint inventors of a new Improvement in Wheel Toys; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to that class of wheel toys which are adapted by means of a handle to be pushed along before the child using the same; and it consists, mainly, in the combination, with the wheel and the handle, of a pitman or connecting-rod, the rear end of which is connected directly or indirectly to the handle, the pitman being caused to support directly or indirectly certain figures,and to give proper movement to the same.

It consists, further,in the combination, with the wheel and handle, of two pitmen having proper attachments, arranged at opposite points on the wheel, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of one of the forms in which ourinvention may be embodied; Fig. 2, a side elevation of another form of the same, and Fig. 3 a partial front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 2.

To enable others skilled in the art. to make our improved toy, we will proceed to describe fully the construction of the same.

A, Figs. 1 and 3, represents a wheel or roller, which, in connection with its fellow wheel, is secured to a proper axle, a, Fig. 3, which axle is itself held in proper bearings in the handle B, as shown. This handle extends a proper distance in a rearward direction, and is adapted at its rear end to be conveniently grasped.

O C, Fig. 1, represent pitrnen or connectingrods, the front ends of which are attached to the wheels at opposite points, as shown, and the rear ends of which are loosely held by means of headed studs, the shanks of which rest in the slot 0, as shown.

D D represent any suitable figures secured to the upper side of the pitmen, those of horses being preferred.

The operationis as follows: Whenthewheel is pushed along the ground the pitmen are caused to reciprocate and to give movement to the figures, one figure advancing while the other is retreating. By the peculiar action of thepitmen, also, the movement of the figure of a horse is caused to resemble that of galloping.

In the modification shown in Fig.2 the rear ends of the pitmen are not directly connected to the handle, but to the lower end of lever E, pivoted to the handle, and to the upper ends of these levers the figures Fare attached. When horses are attached to these levers they are preferably pivoted near the center of the back, as shown, so that they are adapted to have an independentswinging movement upon thelever, this movement being properly guided and limited by means of a stud,f, and slotf, as shown. The operation of this modification does not differ materially from that before described, but the figures II this case, owing to the employment of the levers, have a longer movement.

The toy described is simpleiu construction, and it can he produced at a small cost.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the wheel A and handle B, the pitman U, carrying figures, as described.

2. In combination with wheels A A and a handle, B, the pitmen O O, oppositely located, as described.

3. In combination with the wheel A, handle B, and pitman O, the lever E, as described.

4. The combination of lever E with horse F, pivoted, as described, so as to have a movement independent of the lever.
