Description

J. T. WOODWARD.
WHEELED TOY.
APPLICATION mu) JULY 10. 1917.
1,280,931 Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
\NVENTOR \ja sgb 7%adwazrd WITNESSES ATTORNEY JOSEPH T. "WOODWARD, OF YORK CORNER, MAINE.
WHEELED TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Application filed July 10, 1917. Serial No. 179,715.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. WOODWARD, a citizen of the'United States, residing at York Corner, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wheeled toys and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature upon which a child can sit and propel himself about by his feet and upon which he may coast down hill.
Another object of the invention is to make the device in the form of a horse with a seat thereon placed as a saddle, and providing a single wheel in front and a pair of wheels behind spaced apart to prevent the toy from turning over.
A further object of the invention is to swivel a part of the front legs carrying the front wheel to the other part and to provide reins connected to the swivel part for guidlng the horse.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully descrlbed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a front view.
As shown in these figures the toy is made in the shape of a horse the body 1 of which is made of a strip of wood, or the like to which the strips 3 are secured, these strips being made to represent the hind legs of the horse. 4 represents the strips forming the front legs, while 5 represents pieces of leather secured to the head of the horse and representing its ears. The head is formed on an extension of the strip 1 and is provided with the bridle 6 made of strips of leather or the like. The mane and tail may be formed of any suitable material and secured in place by any suitable means. 7 represents the seat secured to the strip 1 and and representing the saddle. 8 represents a shaft passing through the hoof part of the rear legs and carrying the wheels 9. The lower end of the fore legs is swiveled to the upper portion as at 10, and this lower end carries the front wheel 11. A spring 12 secured to the bottom edge of the strip 1 and to the swivel part of the fore legs keeps the wheel 11 parallel with the rear wheel so the toy will move in a straight line. The reins 12 pass through loops 13 upon the horses nose and are then carried down and secured to the rear part of the swiveled end so that by pulling on one rein or the other the wheel 11 may be turned to guide the horse accordingly. WVhen the rein is loosened the spring 12 will cause the wheel 11 to assume its normal or straight position. I prefer to extend the axle 8 a considerable distance on each side of the horse so as to make the horse difiicult to upset.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A toy of the class described comprising a rear axle having wheels at its opposite ends, a wheel spaced longitudinally from said axle and positioned in advance thereof in a plane midway between said rear wheels, a standard fixed to said axle midway its ends, another standard having a swiveled lower portion, said swiveled portion being bifurcated with said front wheel rotatably mounted between the furcations thereof, a member connecting said standards, a coiled spring connecting the swiveled portion of said front standard to said connecting member to normally hold said front wheel in a plane par allel with the rear Wl1B6lS,SELid member haw son mounted on the standard connecting ing a projection extending in a plane bemember. l yond the front Wheel and disposed verti In testimony whereof I ajflix rny signature cally relatively thereto, and a flexible ele-' in presence of two Witnesses.
