"To all whom it may concern.:
Be itknown that I, FRANK MAGEE, a citizen of Ontario, Canada, residing at Iort Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Rein-Driven Pedal- Propelled Hobby-Horses; and-I do herebyV declare the following to be a full, clear, and' Myact description of the invention, such as Win mable others skilled in the art to which' it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying draw y ings, andto the letters and ures of reference marked thereon, which this specification. 'p
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rein driven or pedal propelled hobby horsesand the object in' view is to produce a simple and eiicient device of4 this nature comprising a v. heel hobbyhorse which may-be guided cit* fr by stirrup or rein operated mecharsin, ie guiding of the device in either case bfng 4y a pivotal front wheelhaving a suitable guiding headl which may be moved .laterally and returned by i spring attachment to ii -f noiiiial position.`
[ull described and then specifically defined ybody of a My invention comprise an apparatus of this nature having various. other details of construction and combinations and arrangements of arts which willlbe hereinafter int e appended claims.
I illustrate,l my invention 'in the accompanying drawings, in which z Figure 1 1s a side elevation'of the inven l tion showing. its application to a horse and cart and to be guided 4by reins. Fig. 2 is'V an enlarged detail in perspective of the guiding provided with" a ,shank portion D which isswiveled in the shell E, integral withl the bracket arm E', which'latter has a horizontally disposed por'- 4tion F secured-to the body of' the horse, prei-l Spe'cication of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 20, v1910.
orm a part of l i y which extends between said heads, is free and wheel of the device isv designatedii'i the drawings by' letter C and has an axle to .which the wheel fork D is lfastened inthe usual manner common upon bicyclesfSa'id -fork is :REIN-DRIVEN PEDAL-PRO1IJELLED HOBBY-HORSE.l

portion of the fork has a head Gp securelj.v fixed thereto and which turns uponth: upper ad of the shelly E and is rovided with cui ed branching arms H, to -t e termi nals I-I oiwhich the reins I are connected.
Patented Maya, 1911.'
' rerablj;T between its forward legs. Said shank Each of saidarn'is 'H has a curved projection K terminating in a head K and which. heads arespaced apart. The upper surface of the horizontally disposed portion.- F is provided with a4 groove Q, adaptedto receive a spring I twhich extends between the two heads ,K and which, from a location adjacent to the forward edge ofthe projection F to the' end is adapted to yieldwith the steering head as it is turned to the right for left, said spring bearing yieldingly against one or the other of the heads when under tension and tending to return the steerinvl gear to the osition shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings a ter the steeringhead has beenrotated in one direction or the other toguide the hobby horse.
In Fig. 4 of. the drawings, I have shown a slightinodification of the invention in'which the front steering wheel, instead of having connected thereto the reins, has the stirrups, designated'by letter T, directlyconnected toI .the arms II of the steering head.A I
In either of the forms shown in the .drawings in which the front steering wheel is adapted' -to be actuated by-stirru'p or rein,
the'device is propelled by crank and link connection with. the axleofthe driving Wheels. y 'n From 'the foregoing, itwill be noted that, by the provision of a hobby horsearrangedfor. driving or riding, a simple and eiicient isadapted to .be guided y the'connection shown and automatically returned to a posi'- tion to cause the horse to 4,travel in a straight line forward or backward vaccordingly as the 'crank mechanism` is driven i onedirection 'or theother.
What Iclaiin to be new is: y 1. A steering apparatus I'or hobby horses comprising a Vguiding wheel,v a steering fork therefor, a horse, a bracketmember'xed to l shank portion of'said steering fork is swiveled, a head ixed to the shank portion of the fork and having branching arms', means con-4 the latter and having a shell in'which the 'means Vis afforded whereb the rontwheel 'nected lto the latter for rocking the fork, a
spring fastened tosaid bracket member and ,servingto return. the fork 'to its normal position after having been rotated Within its.
bearing.
2. Al steering apparatus for hobby horses comprising a guiding Wheel, a steering fork therefor,a horse, a bracket member having a horizontally .disposed projection fastened to the horse and provided with a shell .in which the 4s'hank portion of .said steering fork is i swiveled, a head ifxed'to said shank portion of' theforkand having branching arms,
means fastened to the latter for turning the steering head, fingers upon said arms terminating in heads and spaced apart, a spring fastened to said projection of the bracket' arm and having a free-end extending intermediate-said heads and serving to return th'e steering fork. to its normal position after having beenturned in its bearing.
- 3.- A steeringapparatus for hobby horses comprising a guiding wheel, a steering-fork therefor, a horse, a bracket member having a .horizontally disposed projection fastened to the horse and provided with a shell in which the shankl portion of said steerin fork is swiveled, a head fixed to saidl shan portion of the fork and having upwardly curved arms, reins connected ,to the 1atter, horizontally disposed fingers' intermediate said arms and terminating 1n heads and spaced apart,
Va spring fastened in a groove in said extension bracket arm and havlng its free end intermediate said heads.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix myl signature in the' presence of two Witnesses.
