SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,742, dated May 9, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENooH R. MORRISON, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a full and complete description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a method whereby the legs and'also the body of a toy imitation of an animal as it is propelled on a wheel have a motion mechanically imparted to them representing the movements of the natural animal. In the present example a rabbit is selected.
With reference to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view with the legs extended. Fig. 2 is the opposite side in the same position. Fig. 3 shows the position of the legs and body at the beginningof the leap. Fig. 4 is a plan View.
A represents a sheet-metal plate cut to show the outlines of the animal in elevation.
0 represents a wheel upon which the anireal is supported in its movements.
D and D represent respectively a front and rear leg.
B represents a handle extending to a proper distance in the rear for propelling the toy. The connected end of handle B is attached by a pivot or hub at the center of wheel 0. At 6 handle B is pivoted to'the body A, a washer, a, beinginserted between the handle and body on pivot c to separate them sutliciently to correspond with their distance apart at the hub H, or at lea-st to admit of room for the movement of the wheel. M is a cross-bar in wheel 0, which serves as a bearing for the hub. At 8 the front leg is pivoted to bar M.
E is a connecting bar or rod, the opposite ends of vwhich are pivoted respectively to the front and rear legs at u and u. The pivot to, to which the rear end of .bar E is attached, is inserted through the leg at a point above the central pivot, r, the connection with the front leg being reversed. Curved slots 9 and g in plate A admit of the necessary action of pivots a and u in the movement of the toy.
The operation of the toy is as follows: The wheel is trundled by pushing with the handle, and as'the wheel rotates the wrist or rivets operates as a crank, giving leg D a forward and backward movement, as well as to elevate and lower alternately the front end of the body. Bar E being attached to the front leg below its pivotal point r, and attached to the leg 1) above the pivotal point, the result is that when leg D is carried forward leg D is thrown outin the opposite direction, so that an extended position of the legs is simultaneous, and vice versa. The body being pivoted to the handle at e the crank movement of the pin 8 produces a rocking motion of said body, thus imitating the motion of the natural animal.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The wheel'O, crank s, and bar E, in combination with the body and a fore and hind leg of a toy imitation of a quadruped, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of body A, legs D and D, wheel 0, bar E, and handle B, said body and handle being pivoted at c, and the whole arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
