ABBOTT B. DAVIS, 01? SAUGATUQK, MICHIGAN.
TOY DUCK.
Application filedJuly 29,
, To all whom it may concern.
Be itknown that I, ABBOTT B. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saugatuok, in the county ofAlleganand State ofMichigan, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in :Toy'Ducks; andlIdo hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it. appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a toy, specifically a toy duck, though the invention is not limitedtofthe one form shown. and hereafter described. It is an object and purpose of the present invention to construct a toy,
; having the form of an animal and provided with means whereby it may be propelled over the floor, coupled with which the toy is made to go through certain motions simulating the operation offeeding, allbeing attained with'a simple construction, very economical to make so that the marketing may be at a low cost. Various other objects and purposes'will. appear fully and in detail as understanding of the. invention is had fromithe following description, taken in conmotion with Which,
"Figure-'1 :isa side'elevation ofthe toy. Fig. 2 is avertical section taken longithe accompanying drawing, in
* tudinally and centrally therethrough, and
'Fig..3 is a vertical transverse section taken substantially on :the planesof the broken line 3-3, of Fig. 2.
:Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
Inthe construction, two sides 1 are made of wood and cut in the form of the body of the animal chosen, the same being spaced apart and between which adjacent their lower edges a member 2, preferably of lead is placed and secured permanently. A block 3 is placed between the sides at the rear upper part thereof and also permanently secured in place. At the front upper portion, a combined neck and head portion 4 is placed between the sides 1 and pivotally connected at its lower end thereto, being adapted to turn on the pivot pin 5. A block 6 simulating any desired figure is placed between the sides back of the neck and head portion 4 Specification of Letters Patent.

equipped with a wheel 10, oneof which at least is permanently connected to the shaft. Both may be, if desired. Between the sides 1,,the shaft is bent toform a crank 11. A stirrup 12 extends downwardly from the neck and head portion 4 and a link 1.3 connects the lower portion of said stirrup with the crank 11.
Rods or wires 14 are loosely connected to the shaft 9 one between each wheel 10 and the adjacent side of the body, the sameextending upwardly and tothe rear and being bent toward each other and formed into a handle 15. Any other desired type of handle may be' attached to the ends of the rods 14, as is evident. I
The toy may be run overany smooth surface, the turning of the wheelsserving to turn the shaft, 9, with each revolution of which, the neck and head portion 4 is oscillated back and forth once about its pivot 5, due to the connection through stirrup 12 and link 13 of said member 4 with the crank 11. on the forward movement of the member 4, itsweight serves to partly overbalmice the body, which also tips forward, but on thereturn,
movement is practically an exact simulation of the feeding movements of theanimal which the. toy represents, and in the continued movement ofthe toy in a forward direction, such movements are periodically repeated. The toy is impelled forward, or may be drawn back, by grasping the handle loand imparting the proper force thereto.
The movements of the neck and head portion 4 are simultaneously accompanied by like movements of the figure 6 due to the connection between them made by the members 8. This figure shown at 6 may be'left off if desired.
The construction is simple and economical to manufacture. The form of the animal simulated may be changed without departing from the invention as is evident. The appended claims define the invention, and I consider myself entitled to all forms of shaft 9 extends through the sides 1' above the weight 2 and at each end is Patented Oct. 4, 1 921.
the weight 2 serves to right a the weight, a neck structure that come within the scope of these claims defining the invention.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a body having spaced apart sides, a weight secured between the sides at the lower portion of the body, a shaft extending through the body and formed with a crank portion between said sides of the body above the weight, a neck and head portion pivotally connected at its lower end to the body between the sides thereof, a stirrup extending downwardly from the said head and neck portion, a link connecting the stirrup with the crank portion of the shaft, wheels connected with the ends of the shaft, and means for propelling the toy over the floor, said weight normally holding the body in upright position, substantially as described.
2. A toy comprising a body having spaced apart sides, a'weight secured between said sides at the lower portion of the body, a shaft extending through the body above and head portion pivotally connected at its lower end to the front upper portion of the body, wheels attached to the shaft, one at each end thereof, means for propelling the toy over the floor, and means connecting the shaft and head and neck portion whereby said portion is oscillated back and forth about its pivot on rotation of the shaft, said weight permitting oscillation of the body about the axis of the shaft but normally keeping it in'an upright position, substantially as described.
3. A toy comprising a body, a weight attached to the body at its lower portion, a neck and head portion pivotally connected to the body at its front upper portion, a shaft extending through the body and formed with a crank in its length, means operatively connecting said crank with the neck and head portion whereby on rota- .tion of the shaft, the head and neck portion is oscillated about its pivot, and wheels attached to the shaft for turnlng the same on movement of the toy on said wheels, said weight controlling the movements of the body, substantially as described. v
4. A toy comprising a body, a shaft extending through the body, a weight attached to the body below the shaft, wheels on the shaft, a neck and head portion pivotally connected to the body, means formed on the shaft and means connecting said means with the head and neck portion for oscillating said portion about its pivot on rotation of the shaft, said weight serving to control the movements of the body about the axis bf the shaft, substantially as" described. i
5. A toy containing the elementsin combination defined in claim 4, combined with a figure block pivotally connected at its lower end to the body back of the head'and neck, and means connecting said block with the neck and head portion for simultaneously oscillating said blocktherewith.
6. A toy containing the elements in combination defined in claim 4, combined with a figure block pivotally connected at its lower end to'the body back of the head,
and a rod connecting the head with said figure block, substantially as and for the purposes described.
7. A toy comprising a body having spaced apart sides, a weight secured between said 1 sides at the lower portion of the body, a shaft extending through the body above the weight and formed with a crank portion between the sides of the body, wheels attached to the shaft to turn the same, head portion pivotally connected atits lower end to the body between the sides thereof, means connecting the crank with the neck and head portion for oscillating said portion with rotation body and extending rearwardly therefrom, and a handle formed at the ends of thegrods, said rods being bent together back of the body, substantially as described. a r
