HOBBY HORSE.
No. 430,459. Patented June 17. 1890.

HORACE C. ALEXANDER, OF BONHAM, TEXAS.
HOBBY-HORSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,459, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed October 19, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE O. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonham, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hobby-Horses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in toys; and it consists in providing a hobbyhorse or a stick-horse with a pivoted head, to which is preferably connected a spring, so that the swinging of the head will give the appearance of the horse pulling on the reins held by the operator. I
The invention comprises a head pivoted at one end, a spring secured thereto and to the horse, and a lip on said head to limit the downward movement thereof, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a hobby-horse constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same attached to a stick-horse.
In carrying out my invention the head of the horse is made separate from the body, and is pivoted thereto at its inner end in such manner that by drawing on the reins it will be given arocking motion. To aid this movement and insure the lowering or forward motion of the head, the latter can be weighted, or one end of aspring can be connected to its under side, said spring at its other end being secured to the body of the horse. This spring can be of any size and strength to secure the proper tension.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a Serial No. 327,498. (No model.)
hobby-horse, and a the head thereof, pivoted thereto by a rod or pin a, as shown. To the head is connected the usual rein o The extreme lower end of the head is provided with a lip or tongue a which forms a shoulder fitting a corresponding groove or shoulder on the horses body, so as to limit the downward or forward movement of the head.
b is a spring, preferably rubber, secured at one end to the under edge of head a, and at its rear end to the under side of the horses body. The operator by pulling on the rein will cause the head to move on its pivot, and thus impart an up-and-down or back-and-forward movement to said head in imitation of the natural movement of a horse, the spring serving to always bring the head back to its normal position.-
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein-described toy, consisting of the horse having a rigid body and a pivoted head, and a spring connected at one end to said head, its other end being secured to said body, as set forth.
2. The herein-described toy, consisting of the horse having a rigid body, the head pivoted thereto at its lower inner end, and the spring connected to said head in advance of the pivot thereof and to said body in rearof said pivot, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described improved toy, consisting of the horse, the head pivotally secured thereto and provided with a lip or tongue, and a spring connected to said head and to the body of the horse, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE C. ALEXANDER.
XVitnesses:
J. B. SHORTRIDGE, H. S. Snonrnrnen.
