Description

N. CHAPDELAINE.
TOY.
N ILED JUNE 10. 19:9.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORBERT GHAPDELAINE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR T0 CHARLES HEATON, 0F LOUISEVILLE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
TOY.
Application fil ed June 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nonnnn'r OHAPDE- LAINE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the followin is a full, clear, and exact description of t e invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to toys and more particularly to a figure-wheeled toy which would have the sensation of a hobby horse.
An object of the present invention is to provide a toy having a body portion or figure of a horse which is supported upon wheels, so that when the toy travels over the ground the figure will be given a swinging or waving motion so as to give the sensation of a galloping horse.
With the above and other objectsin view which will hereinafter appear as the descri tion continues, the invention consists of t e novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In'the accompan ing drawing has been shown a simple an preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificlng the efliciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawin s:-
Fi ure 1 is a side elevation of the toy embodymg the present invention;
. Fig. 2 is a detail rear end elevation of the same;
gig. 3 is a detail view of the rear wheel; an a Fig. 4 is a detail section throu h the same.
Referring now more particu arly to the accompanying drawings wherein ike and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The toy as herein shown comprises a body Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 306,283.
portion 1 which is preferably out from a thick piece of planking having the configuration of the body of an ordinary horse-and connected to this body portion are a pair of front legs 2 and a pair of rear legs 3. A seat 4 is secured upon the body of the horse and extending through the body 1 is a suitable steering post 5 which is connected to the front legs 2, whereby they may be turned for guiding the toy over the ground. Journaled within the front legs 2 is a front wheel 6 which consists preferably of a disk and secured to each front leg 2 is a foot rest or stirrup preferably made of angle iron as shown, and the tread portion 8 thereof is arranged above and slightly in advance of the axle 9 of this front wheel 6. The rear wheel 10 is preferably made of a disk and its center point is indicated by the numeral 11 in Fig. 3. This rear wheel or disk 10 is provided with an opening 12 therein which is arranged eccentric to the center point 11 of the wheel. Adapted to be seated within this opening 12 is a block 13 and extending through this block and arranged eccentrically therein is a shaft 14 which connects the wheel 10 with the rear legs 3. A washer or plate 15 is connected to the block 13 through the bolt 16 whereby this block will be securely retained within the opening 12 and held against motion. As the whee 10 is revolved the body of the toy will be caused to rise and lower, due to the fact that this wheel is eccentrically connected to the rear legs 3 and as the toy is propelled over the round it will be given a waving or gallopmg motion, as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1. To increase or decrease the gallop- 'ing motion of the horse the block 13 should be moved within the opening 12. When the block 13 is in the position as shown in Fig. 3, the axle 14 is farther away from the cen ter line 11, thereby giving a greater -ga loping motion to the toy, but by loosening the bolt 16 the block 13 may be revolved within the openi n 12 thereby bringing the shaft 14 nearer t 'e center 11 whereupon the bolt 16 is again tightened and by thus ad'usting this block the galloping motion 0 the toy may be regulated as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A toy comprising a body portion having the configuration of a horse, a pair of front legs pivotally connected thereto, a air of rear legs ri idly secured thereto, a W eel journuled \vit iin said front legs, a shaft carried by said rear legs, a rear wheel, a block eccentrically connected within said rear wheel and said shaft extending through said block substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A to of the character described comprising a body portion having the configuration of a horse, a seat mounted upon said body portion, a pair of legs pivotally connected to said body portion, a steering post connected to said legs, a wheel journaled within said legs, foot rests secured to said legs having the treadle portions thereof arranged above and in advance of the center of said wheel, a pair of rear legs rigidl secured to said body portion, a sha t journaled within said rear legs, a rear wheel, a block ad'ustable and eccentricall secured within sai rear wheel, and said ax e extending through said block.
11 witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
NORBERT CHAPDELAINE.
