Description

P. STRONG WHEELED TOY April 15, 1930.
Filed Nov. 9, 1928 ATTORNEYS latented Apr. l5,
PATENT OFFICE PETER STRONG, VOF WINCI-IENDON, MASSACHUSETTS WHEELED TOY Application tiled November My said invention relates to` a figure wheeled toy of the type in which, when it is drawn along the ground, the rotation of the wheels imparts motion to the ligure.
f, The invention aims to provide a toy of this character which may be very economically manufactured, which will be durable in use, and which will present an amusing and attractive appearance.
Vith these and other objects in'view, the invention includes the novel construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, the invention being defined by the claims appended hereto.
What I at present consider the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy, showing it in raised position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, and
Fig. 8 is a detail.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral l designates a suitable platform preferably of wood and having de- V pending side flanges la in which are journaled the axles 2a and 3a of the front and rear wheels 2 and 3 respectively.
Supported upon the platform is an animal ligure, shown as a desirable form as the figure of a rabbit having a body 4: and head la preferably formed integral and having rear legs Zlb, front legs el, ears 4d and tail lle, all articulated to the body in the manner hereinafter described. The rear legs are lixedly secured to the platform, preferably by being set into grooves lb therein and secured by glue or the like, and these legs carry rigidly connected to their upper ends a pivot pin b which passes loosely through a cylindrical "il" opening in the body so as to form a pivot bearing therefor. The rear end of the body is connected by a link or pitman 5 with the crank 3x of the axle 3a, so that as the crank revolves as the toy is pulled along the floor, .15 the body of the animal is caused t0 rise and e, 192s. serial No. 318,213.
fall, due to its pivotal support on the pin carried by the fixed legs lll. The upper end of the link is connected to the body justV be-y low the tail el@ (which is pivoted to the body by pin e) by suitable means such as a staple 6 5a, and the link may have an extension 5b which, as the body rises, will engage the tail and elevate the same, or the tail may be left free to be oscillated by the rapidity of movement of the body.
The body is made hollow, preferably by securing together two similar parts hollowed out on their inner faces. The pivot pin b is rigidly connected to the legs and rotatably engages the body by passing freely or loosely through openings in the walls thereof. The front legs and ears are likewise fast to the ends of the pivot pins c and al respectively, which pass through openings in the walls of the body and head, and the pivot pins b, 0 and ci are all connected by a rod 6 which has pivotal connections Z9, c, d to the pins b, c and d but offset from the axes thereof. The result of this is that as the body rises, point of connection b beingstationary, the pins c and (Z are rocked, thus swinging the front legs back and ears forward, and vice versa.
I claim:
l. A toy comprising a wheeled platform and an animal figure thereon, said animal figure having rear legs rigidly connected to the platform, a hinge pin rigidly connected to the legs and pivotally supporting the body of the figure, the front legs of the figure having a pivot pin rigidly connected thereto and pivotally engaging the body, said ligure having ears, a hinge pin rigidly connected to said ears and pivotally engaging the head of the ligure, wheel operated means for swinging the body on the pivot of the rear legs, and a link having offset connections to the pivots of the rear and front legs and ears respectively.
2. A toy comprising a wheeled platform,
the rear Wheels having a cranked axle, an animal fi ure having rear legs rigidly secured to the pltform and a body articulated on said legs, said animal figure having a pivoted 5 tail, a link connectin the rear of the body just below the tail Wit the, crank on the axle, the upper end of said link having a. rigid angularly extending projection to engage beneath and actuate the tail.
3. A to according to claim l in which the three inge pins are disposed in a conimon plane and the link comprises a straight bar overlying the pivot pins and pivotally connected directl thereto.
A1 5 In testimony w ereof I afiix 1n signature.
PETER TRONG.
