This invention relates to toys, particularly those of the wheeled figure type, and has for its object the provision of a novel toy which has the appearance of a clown walking upon a barrel, it being intended that the device be equipped with a suitable handle whereby it may be rolled upon the floor or ground and means being provided for engaging against pivoted legs of the figure for causing movement thereof in a life-like manner during rotation of the supporting cylinder or barrel.

An important object is the provision of a toy of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, automatic in operation when pulled or pushed along, highly attractive and entertaining and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown my device as comprising a cylindrical barrel it including two similar sections l2 and I4 respectively, closed at their outer ends by disks I 6 and 13 respectively and provided at 2 points spaced from their inner ends with partitions 29. The section 12 and M are secured upon a central shaft 22 which is circular in cross section and which has its ends projecting beyond the disks i6 and I8 and terminating in trunnions 24 journaled within the arms of a yoke 26 carried by a suitable handle 28 having the knob 30 on the end thereof. Mounted upon the arm 38 exteriorly of the barrel is a figure 42 which may be made to represent a clown, or which may have any other preferred appearance or characteristics which will make it attractive and ornamental. The figure preferably has jointed arms 44 and pivoted legs 46.

Suitably secured upon or formed on the outside of the sections l2 and I4 near the inner peripheral edges thereof are strips or cleats 48 so positioned as to engage the feet of the figure.

In the use of the device it is pulled or pushed along by means of the handle 28 so as to roll upon the fioor, ground or other surface. Owing to the provision of the weight 40 the figure 4.2 will always remain upright at the top of the barrel while the barrel rotates. As the successive strips or cleats 48 engage the feet of the figure, it is apparent that the legs will be swung and in this way the figure will have the appearance of walk.- ing or climbing the moving barrel, an action which is bound to be very attractive and amusing to the children.

While I have not shown or described any particular or peculiar mode of decoration, it will be readily apparent that I may make various parts of different shapes and that the parts may be brightly colored by painting or other means. I also reserve the right to make changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A toy of the character described. comprising a barrel designed to be rolled, said barrel comprising two opposed horizontal sections spaced apart from each other and provided at their outermost end with tread discs of larger diameter than said sections, a shaft journalled in said discs and extending inwardly thereof, a support journaled with respect to the axis of the barrel on said shaft, and having one end weighted whereby to remain normally in upright position, and a figure carried by the other end of said support and located exteriorly of the barrel, the figure having pivoted legs nearly touching the inner periphery of each section of the barrel, and projections on the periphery of each section of the barrel in line with the bottoms of the pivoted legs for engaging said pivoted legs for effecting swinging thereof.

A toy of the character described, comprising a barrel formed of similar sections of cylin drical shape arranged in spaced relation, a shaft extending through both sections, a handle connected with the ends of the shaft, a supporting arm journaled upon said shaft and having one end weighted and its other end extending through the space between the sections, a figure mounted upon said second named end of the support said figure having pivoted legs and spaced projections on the inner periphery of said sections for engaging said pivotal legs to effect the swinging thereof.

A toy of the character described comprising a barrel formed of similar sections of cylindrical shape arranged in spaced relation, a. shaft extending through both sections, a handle connected with the ends of the shaft, a ball on the end of said handle, a supporting arm journaled upon said shaft and having one end weighted and its other end extending through the space between the sections, a figure mounted upon said second named end of the support, and having pivoted legs, and a series of cleats on the periphery of the barrel sections at the adjacent ends thereof for engagement with the pivoted legs of the figure for causing swinging movement thereof as the barrel rotates.
