Filed Aug. 19, 1929 MQW I ATTO EYS.
Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOY Application filed August 19, 1929.
My invention relates to toys of the type adapted to be moved over a surface with moving elements carried thereby and designed to move in prescribed way as said toy is moved over the floor or other surface.
Among the salient objects of the present invention are: to provide a toy having running-gear with a revolving element carried thereupon and adapted to turn about its own axis as said running-gear is moved over the floor, said revolving element having therein another movable element which is individually moved by the revolving movement of said revolving element upon said running-gear; to provide in such a toy a revolving element in the form of a wheel with movable elements slidably mounted upon the spokes of said wheel, whereby they move to and from the hub or center of said wheel as it is revolved on said running-gear; to provide a revoluble element which is de tachably mounted upon the running-gear by being set between the traction wheels of said running-gear so as to be turned as said traction wheels move upon a surface; to provide a toy having two traction wheels somewhat in the form of spools and connected together in such manner that another wheel can be placed between said traction wheels with its rim resting between the end portions thereof and riding upon the middle or neck portion of each traction Wheel; and, in general, to provide a simple, inexpensive and attractive toy of the general character referred to.
In order to explain my invention, I have illustrated one embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now explain.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy embodying my invention; and
Figure 2 is a front end view thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings, I have provided a running-gear including two traction wheels 3 and 4, of spool-like form, connected by outside bars or members as 5, extended at the front end, as at 5, to have attached thereto a pull cord 6. Each traction wheel has the end portions, as 3 and a middle or neck portion, as 3a, providing a Serial No. 386,818.
supporting means for a revoluble element, here illustrated as a wheel 7 having a hub 70:, spokes 77) and rim 70, with colored elements 8, slidably mounted on its spokes and adapted to move freely in and out on said spokes as said wheel revolves.
It will be seen that the revoluble element, or wheel 7, is removable and can be lifted from the traction wheels at will, and also that as said running-gear is pulled over the floor or other surface, said wheel 7 will be revolved and said colored elements will move to and from the hub by gravity, thus producing a pleasing effect and creating much interest for the child playing with said toy. If the moving elements 8 are given the colors of the rain-bow, as they revolve and move in and out, a beautiful colored effect will be produced. Said elements 8 are shaded to indicate different colors in accordance with the charts for indicating colors.
I do not limit my invention to the details of construction and arrangement here shown for explanatory purposes, realizing that many changes can be made within the scope of the invention, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. A toy which includes two traction wheels, each having two spaced traction portions and a neck portion therebetween, and a revoluble element seated between said spaced traction portions and resting upon and turned by said neck portions, said revoluble element being held against tilting sideways only by the spaced sides of the traction portions of said traction wheels and being free and unsupported above its center, whereby it can be lifted bodily from said traction wheels.
2. A toy including in combination, two traction wheels connected together in alinement and each having two spaced traction portions and a neck portion therebetween, a revoluble element seated between said spaced traction portions and resting upon and turned by said neck portions, said revoluble element being held against tilting sideways only by the two inner faces of the traction wheels above the neck portions thereof, and movable elements on said revoluble element adapted to move by gravity as it is revolved by its contact with the neck portions of said traction wheels.
3. In a toy two spaced traction wheels, each having a traction portion and a neck portion ofreduced diameter centrally thereof, a revoluble element seated between the neck portions of said traction wheels and dipping below the axes thereof at its lower side, the larger portions of said traction wheels projecting on opposite sides of said revoluble element to prevent it from tipping sidewise in either direction, the upper part of said revoluble element being free and unsupported whereby to be lifted from said traction wheels at will, said revoluble element being revolved by the turning of said neck portions of said traction wheels, and elements mounted on said revoluble element and caused to move as it turns.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, this 8th day of August,
, WINFRED P. SHEPHERD.
