Be it known that l, GUY FIsK JoNTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to toys that contain endless tracks or paths and self propelled wheeled toys that run on the tracks or paths.
Among the objects of the present invention to provide a toy which will provide diversified amusement, and instruction; to provide a toy containing one or more endless tracks, which occupies little floor space, and to provide a toy of this character, which may be easily assembled and disassembled by persons of limited experience. Another object is to provide an endless tra'k arrangement in a toy, which may be caused to stand in vertical or lie in horizontal planes, and upon which the wheeled toy may travel when the track arrangement is in either of said planes, and which track arrangement may be caused to remain stationary, for the toy to run thereon, or may be caused to rotate by the action of the wheeled toy thereon.
ll ith these and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel features, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a central, vertical section taken through the toy; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the assembled toy seen in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wheel or drum, detached from its support, and resting on the horizontal surface of any object, such as a table, desk, the floor and the like.
Re erring to said drawing, which illustrates a simple embodiment of the invention, the reference character 9 designates a standard, which has a wide base portion adapted to rest on any horizontal surface. At the upper end of the standard are two sockets or recesses 14, 15, the one designated by the reference character 14 being disposed in a horizontal plane, and the one numbered 15 being disposed in a vertical plane. In either of said sockets or recesses, 14, 15, may be secured, by friction or otherwise, a spindle 8, upon which is placed a wheel 2. The wheel 2 has a hub 1, which surrounds the part of the spindle which projects from the standard 9 and at one end of said hub 1, is a flange 3 in whiih the spokes 16 of the wheel 2 are held. Said spokes 16 radiate from the flange 8, and their end portions 17 are bent at right angles to the main portions thereof. Secured on said end portions 17, of the spokes 16, is an endless track or path, formed of two rails 4, 5, that may he of any suitable cross section. Said endless track is here shown as circular in form, of which the axis co ncides with the axis of the spindle 8.. The rails may be secured on the spokes by pins 10 that pass through the spokes, one pin on each side of a rail. The track formed by the rails 4, 5, is used when the wheel 2 is held in upright position.
Eiecured on the main portions of the spokes, is a second endless trak or path which may be formed of rails 6, 7, secured on the spokes in any desired manner.
The rail 6, of this last mentioned track or path surrounds the rail 7, as shown, and provides a track capable of use when the wheel is held in a horizontal or approximately horizontal plane or in a slightly tilted plane.
Assoc ated with the wheel 2, is a selfpropelled wheeled toy 13, such as a toy automobile, locomotive car, wagon or the like, and the flanged wheels of said wheeled toy are adapted to rest and run on either of the tracks of the wheel. The wheels of the wheeled toy run on the edges of the rails, and said rails are spaced apart properly to fit the wheels of the wheeled toy.
Secured to some stationary member, as for instance the spindle 8 is an adjustable stop device 18 whi h as shown comprises a radially extending arm 19 secured to the sp ndle 8 and a pin 12, adjustably secured at the end of the arm 19 and arranged to be moved into the path of the spokes 16 to thereby arrest movement of the wheel, and
also arranged to be moved into the path of 5, causes said rails and therewith the en tire wheel to rotate upon the spindle 8. If the stop device is drawn away from the wheeled toy, the tendency for the latter will be to move forward and up along the track, but this movement is overcome by the wheel which being rotated in the reversed direction by the wheels of the wheeled toy.
The spindle 8 may be placed in the up right socket 15 of the standard and the wheel 2 may placed on the spindle while in this position. The traelr formed by th rails 6, 7 may now be used to support the wheeled toy 13. The stop device may be used as before to hold the whee-led toy stationary, the latter may be released therefrom, and permitted travel around on the horizontal track, which may be held stationary by the pin 12.
The wheel 2, may be disconnected from the spindle and stood upon a horizontal surface shown in Fig. 3, and the wheeled toy 2, placed upon the track formed by the rails 4, 5. In this condition the rotating wheels of the wheeled toy 13, cause the wheel to roll along on its support in addition to rotating upon its axis.
More or less variation of the exact details of construetion is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A toy, comprising a standard, a spindle secured thereon, said standard having means for holding said spindle in substantially a horizontal or substantially a vertical posiion, a wheel rotatably mounted on said spindle. and having an endless track thereon, and a self propelled wheeled toy removably mounted on said track.
2. A toy comprising a standard, a rotatory wheel, a spindle for said wheel arranged to be secured on said standard in substantially a horizontal or a vertical plane, said wheel having two endless tracks, one arranged for use in a substantially vertical plane and the other for use in a substantially horizontal plane, and a self propelled wheeled-toy adapted to be removably mounted on either of said tracks.

A toy, comprising a standard, a rotatory wheel, a spindle for said wheel arranged to be secured on said standard in substantially horizontal and vertical planes, said wheel having two endless tracks, one arranged for use in a substantially vertical plane and the other for use in a substantially horizontal plane, a self propelled wheeled toy adapted to be removably mounted on either of said tracks, and an adjustable stop device for arresting bodily movement of said wheeled toy.
In a toy, a wheel having a plurality of endless tracks thereon, the tread faces of which are angularly disposed with respect to each other, and a self propelled wheeled toy arranged to be mounted on either of said trons, one of said tracks forming a rolling support for the toy.
6. In a wheeled toy, a standard, a wheel rotatably mounted thereon, and having an endless track thereon, a self propelled wheeled toy on said track, and a stop device arranged to alternately arrest movement of said wheel and said wheeled toy.
