To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARCUS JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Imiproved Pleasure-Railway, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved pleasure railway for use in pleasure resorts, park s, exhibit1on grounds, fairsand other places of amusement,'and arranged to accommodate a large number of persons at a time and to provide an exhilarating ride for the participants.

Another object is to provide a pleasure railway which is simple and durable in con- VVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of'the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of a portion of the pleasure railway and showing more particularly one of the cars, the platform on which the cars travel, and the propelling means for the cars;

On a suitably constructed platform 10 is formed an endless slot having segmental end portions 11 and 12 and connecting side portions 13 and 14 of undulating and zigzag shape and connecting tangentially with the segmental end portions 11 and 12, as will be readily understood by reference to Flg. On the top of the platform 10 are adapted to travel a number of cars 15. each having a car base 16 and a car body17, preferably. made circular, and provlded with a centrally arranged kingpin 18 en a in ia bearin' 19 formed on the car basii 1 6 t o allow th car body 17 to turn on the car base 16 and be carried bodily along by the car base 16 when the latter is propelledover the platform, as hereinafter more fullyexplained.

The car body 17 is preferably made circular and provided with a circularly arranged to seat 20' to accommodate a number of persons at a time. The under side of the car base 16 is provided'with rollers 21 mounted to travel on the platform 10, sundry of the rollers 21 being on one side of the slot and sundry on the other side thereof.

The forward end of each base 16 is provided with a projection 25 having a bearing 26 engaged by the upper-end of a vertically extending pivot pin' 27 extending downward through the platform slot, and the lower portion of this pivot pin 27 islprovided with two collars 28 and 29 mountedto travel in a guideway 30 arranged beneath the platform 10 and following the platform slot formed of the end portions .11 and 12 and the side portions 13 and 14, as above explained. formed of

31 and 32 located on opposite sides offlthe platform slot (see Fig. 3). The outer angle iron 31 is continuous and follows the outer wall of the platform slot while the inner angle iron 32 follows the inner wall of the side portions 13 and 14 and the end portion 12 of the platform slot, and the ends of this inner angle iron 32 terminate at the segmental end slot por tion 11. a

The portion 33 of each pivot pin 27 intermediate the collars 28 and 29 is enlarged and engaged by a tubular split conical'wedge 35 clampingly engagin a corresponding portion of an endless traveling cable 40 and for imparting a traveling motion to the cars 15 over the platform 10 with the cars approxi mately in the path indicated by the platform slot. In order to impart a traveling motion to the cable 40 use is made of a drum 41 in the formof a channel beam, to which lead tangentially the ends of the inner angle iron 32, and on the peripheral face of this drum 41 are secured spaced lugs 42 adapted-to engage each pivot pin 27 to positively move the same along and thusimpart a traveling .mo tion to the cable 40. The drum 41 is secured to a rim 50 (see Figs. 3 and 4) mount- .ed at its inner edge on rollers 51 journaled on thecircular support 52. On theunder side of the rim 50' is secured a bevel gear wheel 55 in mesh with a pinion. 56 (see Fig. 1) secured on a shaft 57. driven by a suitable motor 58 installed below the platform .10. It will be noticed that when the motor 58 is running a rotary motion is given to the bevel gear wheel55, the rim 50 and the drum 41 whereby the lugs 12 ofthe' drum impartv a continuous traveling motion to the cable .40. A segmental guard .rail 63 is arranged on the platform10 concentric with the end slot portion 12 and outside of the same to hold the car body in aicentral position during itstravel around this end of the pleasure railway. From the foregoing it will. be seen that 'a very exhilarating ride is provided for the occupants of the car bodies17.

It will further be noticed that .a large number of cars are caused to travel simultaneously over the platform 10 and'hence a large number of persons can be accommodated at a time. V

Having thus described my inventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7 'i a f 1. A pleasure railway, comprising a platform provided with anendless guideway, a plurality of cars mounted'to travel on the said platform and extendingacross the said. guideway, and propelling means arranged underneath the platform and having. con-- necting means extending through the said guideway and each connected with acorresponding car to move the latter forward and to allow it to swing sidewise on the platform while traveling-thereon.

A pleasure railway, comprising a platform having an endless guideway, cars each having a base and a car body mounted to turn on the said base, the latter being mounted to travel on the said platform, propelling means in the form of an endless traveling cable arrangedbelow the said platform, a driving drum around which passes the said cable, means connecting the said drum with the cable to impart a traveling motion, and

6. A pleasure railway, comprising a platform having an endless guideway, cars each having a base and a car body mounted to turn on the said base, the latter being mounted to travel on the said platform, propelling means in the form of an endless cable arranged below the said platform, a driving drum provided on its peripheral face with spaced lugs, and pivot pins attached to the said cable and projecting through the said guideway, the forward ends of the car bases being pivoted on the said pivot pins to pull the cars along and to allow the cars to swing sidewise, the said pivot pins being adapted to be engaged by the said drum lugs to impart a traveling motion to the said cable.

7. A pleasure railway, comprising a platform having an endless guideway, cars each having a base and a car body mounted to turn on the said base, the latter being mounted to travel on the said platform, propelling means having connecting devices following the said guideway and on which the said car bases are mounted to swing, and means for rotating the said car bodies.

8. A pleasure railway, comprising a platform having an endless guideway, cars each having a base and a car body mounted to turn on the said base, the latter being mounted to travel on the said platform, propelling means having connecting devices following the said guideway and on which the said car bases are mounted to swing, and means at the ends of the said guideway for rotating the said car bodies;

9. A pleasure railway, comprising a platform having an endless guideway, cars each having a base and a car body mounted to turn on the said base, the latter being mounted to travel on the saidplatform, propelling means in the form of an endless cable arranged below the said platform, a driving drum provided on its peripheral face with spaced lugs, pivot pins attached to the said cable and projecting through the said guideway, the forward ends of the said car bases being pivoted on the said pivot pins to "pull the cars along and toallow the cars to swing sidewise, the said pivot pins being adapted to be engaged by the said drum lugs to 1m} part a traveling motionto the'said cable, a gear wheel oneach car body, and segmental racks arranged concentrically on the ends of the guideway to rotate the car bodies.

10. A pleasurerailway, comprising a platform having an endless guideway, cars each having a base and a car body mounted to turn on the said base, the latter being mounted to travel on the said platform, propelling means in the form of an endless traveling cable arranged below the said platform, a driving drum around which passes the said cable, means connecting the said drum with the cable to impart a traveling motion thereto, pivot pins extending upward from the cable through the said guideway, the said car bases being mounted to swing on the said pivot pins, and guide pins intermediate the pivot pins and attached to the cable, the said guide pins engaging the said guideway.

11. A pleasure railway, comprising a plat form having an endless slot, at guideway having a continuous se mental end portion on the under side of the platform and having an interrupted segmental portion at the other end, the guideway being formed of angle irons arranged on opposite sides of the said slot and followlng the same, the outermost angle iron being 'contlnuous and segmental at the'ends of the guideway, and the inner I angle iron terminating'at itsends at one of the segmental end portions of the guideway, a driven drum on the interrupted end portion of the guideway, cars mounted to travel on the said platform, an endless cable passing around the said drum, pivot pins attached to the cable and a mounted to travel between said angle irons of the said guideway, the

said pivot pins extending through the said slot and connecting with the said cars, and lugs on the said drum engaging the said pivot pins to impart a traveling motion to the said cable.

12. A pleasure railway, comprising aplatform having an endless slot, a guideway having a continuous segmental end portion on Y the under side of the platform and having an interrupted segmental portion on the other end, the guideway being formed of angle irons arranged on opposite sides of the said slot and following the same, the outermost angle iron being continuous and segmental'at the ends of the guideway and the inner angle iron terminating at itsv ends at one of the segmental end portions of the guideway, a driven drum at the interrupted end portion of the guideway, cars mounted to travel on the said platform,an endless cable passing around the said drum, pivot pins attached to the cable and mounted to travel between said angle irons of the said guideway, the said pivot pins extending through the said slot and connecting with the said cars; lugs'on the said drum engagand attached to the said cable intermediate the pivot pins.

13. A pleasure railway; comprising a platform, acar having a car base and a car body 7 1o mounted to turn on the-said base, the latter having means engaging the said platform to support the car on the platform and to allow it to travel thereon, means propelling the said car base along an endless path extending over the said platform, and means periodically turning the car body on the car base during the latters travel along the path. 7 Y
