Description
CHARLIS H. B. STAGE, OF' FOXBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
FIG-.URE WHEELED TOY.
Application filed August 11, 1917.
To all whom t'mag/ concern.' y
Be it known that I, CHABLIS H. B. STAOY, a citizen df the United States, and a resident ofv Foxboro, county of. Norfolk, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Figure Vheeled rIoys, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to toys and games, and its object is to provide a novel and at tractive toy of the rotatable or perambulatory type.
In the drawing of the embodiment of my invention illustrated and described herein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2, a horizontal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking downward, and
Fig. 3, a similar view of a modied form of construction.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, my novel toy is shown as comprising a hollow rotatable member 1 as a wheel, herein of the solid type, that is, without spokes, the rim 2 being connected by a sheet or plate 3 on one side which may be ornamented or decorated in any desired manner and by any preferred. means, and adding much to the attractive appearance of the toy. This rotatable member may be of any convenient size and suitable material, as wood, and it is provided with a suitable propelling member as a handle 4, by means of which the member 1 may be propelled in advance of the user or it may be drawn thereby behind the user. In this case the handle is secured to the hub 5 of the member 1 as by a bolt 6 extended through the hub ,and handle ends,
In the space within the rim of the rotatable member 1 the hub is provided with a sleeve 8, on which is mounted a figure carrying and balancing member, as a weight 9, shown here as suspended from said sleeve and freely movable thereon and concealed from view by a plate 9a on one end of the hub 5.
rIhe ligure carrying and balancing member 9 is provided with one or more figure or symbol supporting arms 10, 10, which are offset at 11, 11, sufficiently to avoid the overhang of the rim 2 of the wheel l., and are then carried upwardly a convenient distance Specification of Letters Patent.
ratentea aan@ a5, taie?. Serial No. 185,725.
to receive the ligure or symbol 12, of which there may be one or more.
In Fig. 3, I have illustrated a modification of the foregoing construction wherein the rotatable member 1 is composed of two similar parts or half members, each comprising a rim 2 and plate 3 carried in the same manner by the hub 5. In this case the handle 4 is preferably provided with a plow 13 which travels in the space between the two half members `or wheel sections 1, and prevents the accumulation of dirt therein.
The symbol bearing arms 10, 10, may carry any desired figure or symbol that appeals to the fancy, either in respect to size, character and appearance, and of course this figure or symbol may be as elaborate as desired. Herein the symbol is that of a miniature Uncle Sam carrying a musket on his shoulder.
The Aligure balancing means 9 is preferably proportioned as to weight and action and otherwise adapted to so balance the particular figure intended to be carried thereby that it will in general maintain the figure 12 in a suitable, and herein substantially upright position. Obviously, when the wheel is rotated the motion of the hub 5 will cause a slight rotation of the sleeve 8 and rocking action of the symbol 12 which will be somewhat intermittent, and resemble generally the swinging motion of the body of a marching soldier or walking animal. but when the rotatable member is stopped the figure balancing` weight will quickly bring the oscillating or rocking figure to a stop in a generally natural and upright position relative to the wheel. Rapid rotation of the wheel, or by running with it, will cause more marked motion of the symbol typifying a running soldier.
bviously one of these toys may be grasped with each hand and thus used in pairs, and when used in this manner by several children they present an attractive representation of a miniature traveling army or a collection of figures, whatever they may chance to be.
l/Vhile I have herein illustrated and described one embodiment of my invention, it obviously may be modified without sacrificing the spirit of the invention, and within the scope of the appended claims.
Claims:
1. A toy comprising a closed rotatable member, a symbol balanced thereon for free rocking motion and a handle for the rotatable member.
2. A toy comprising a closed rotatable member, a ligure balancing,` Weight movably mounted Within said member, figure supporting arms on the Weight permitting free rocking motion, a figure on the arms, and a handle for the rotatable member.
3. A toy comprising a closed rotatable member, a freely rocking ligure on said member, and concealed means adapted to normally return said figure to substantially upright position.
4. A ligure Wheeled toy comprising a closed, multi-part rotatable balance weight carrying member, figure supporting arms extended between said multi-part members, a freely rocking figure thereon, a balance Weight Within said multi-part members, a handle therefor, a plow on said handle for maintaining clear the supporting' arm passage between said multi-part members.
In testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this specification.
CHABLIS H. B. STACY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
