To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Jonn H. VVAnnnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in toys.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a flat piece of disk or other desirable shape, containing an aperture within which there is suitably pivoted a spinner that may be rapidly rotated by being blown at from almost any angle. When a current or blast of air is directed to strike the spinner on either side of its axis, it will be rotated at a rate corresponding to the strength of that current as aflected by the angle at which it is blown, irrespective of whether the piece is held between the lips, or in front of the mouth, of the person holding it, thus aifording amusement for him and for those who may be in his presence.

Since the spinner when at rest is adapted to occupy the same plane as that of the piece containing it, the whole presents a flat structure which may be readily inclosed in an en velop. This quality, together with the fact that on its flat surfaces advertising matter may be prominently displayed, makes the device valuable not only as a toy, but also as a mailable advertising novelty.

The preferred forms of embodiment of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a plan view of my device embodied in the form of a-disk containing a circular rotor or spinner. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing the spinner in a vertical position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my device in the form of a rectangular piece containing an oblong spinner. And Fig. 4 is a side view thereof, showing the spinner in a vertical position.

Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.

In a detailed description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a fiat piece of cir cular or other desired shape and which may be constructed of metal, wood, cardboard or other suitable material. Provided within the piece 1, preferably at its middle portion, is an aperture or hole 2 which may be circular as shown in Fig. 1, oblong as illustrated in Fig. 8, or of any other desirable form.

Suitably secured within the piece 1 so as to project from opposite directions a short distance into the aperture 2, are two pivot pins 3 3 which rotatably support a rotor or spinner 4 within said aperture. The spinner 4: may also be rotatably supported within the aperture 2, by a single shaft or axle 5, as shown in Figs. 8 and 42. The shape of this spinner conforms to that of the aperture, and is of a size to permit its free movement within the latter. To make it particularly attractive, the spinner 4 may be colored if desired; for instance it has a red color in Fig. 3.

In operation, the piece 1 may be held between the lips, or in front of the mouth, whereupon the rotor, when blown at above or below its axis from a direction not parallel with the latter, will spin at a rapid rate, to the delight of the holder and those who may be in his presence.

For children my device is an attractive and instructive toy: and for adults it may not only be a source of amusement, but in addition it is adapted to serve as an impressive advertising novelty. Tts flat surface, and the fact that the spinner 4 when at rest normally occupies the same plane as that of the piece 1, makes it an advertising toy which may be readily inclosed in an envelop for delivery through the mails. (See Figs. 1 and On its fiat surfaces suggestive advertising matter may be prominently displayed, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and its simplicity and consequent cheapness of construction renders my device an advertising novelty that may be widely and effectively distributed at minimum cost.

The term flat as l have used it in the specification and shall hereafter employ it in the claims, is intended to mean a surface which is approximately flat for all the intents and purposes of my improved device.

I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any changes or modifications may be made therein within the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having described my invention, 1 claim:

1. A toy comprising a fiat piece provided with an aperture, and a flat spinner mounted within the latter for rotation by a blast of air from the human mouth.

2. A toy comprising a flat piece provided with an aperture, and a flat spinner 1nounted Within the latter for rotation by a blast of air from the human mouth, said spinner adapted to be brought to rest in the same plane as that occupied by the piece which supports it.

3. A toy comprising a fiat piece-provided with an aperture, a fiat spinner conforming in shape to, but of less size than, the aperture, and means by which said spinner is supported Within said aperture for rotation by a blast of air from the human month, said spinner adapted to be brought to rest in the same plane as that occupied by the i piece Which supports it.
