To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DONALD CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys or Games, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to toys or games, or more particularly to a toy or game in which printed subjects may be mechanically manipulated to produce puzzling` and amusing combinations.

I will lirst describe one embodiment of,I my invention, and will then point out the novel features in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front face view of a toy or game embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section thereof, and Fig. 8 is a rear face View. Fig. 4 is a front face view of a modification having a different physical outline from that of Figs. 1 to 3 and lacking some of the mechanical features thereof. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 with the top or cover piece removed showing the relation of the two overlapping picture disks. Fig. 6 is a central cross-section on the plane 6-6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a face View of the back piece and the disk carried by it.

The present invention relates to the same class of toy or game as illustrated in my prior Patent No. 975,119, of Nov. 8, 1910, and in common therewith the toy comprises a pair of overlapping disks bearing pictures, the same rotatable about separated centers, and there being a frame or support to which both disks are pivoted. Thus in the draw'- ings there is shown a lower disk A, an upper disk B and a support C corresponding generally with said prior patent. The following additional features are shown. Said support instead of consisting merely of a back piece is herein shown as comprising a cover piece C which substantiallyl covers the disk but is provided with an apert-ure at F through which portions of both disks are visible. In fact in the present improvement the support to which the picture disks are pivoted consists of bo-th cover piece C and back piece C2, the several disks being pivotally mounted between said back and cover pieces. to each other by adhesive or in any convenient manner. As a matter of convenience and simplicity in construction the cover and back pieces are shown as'integral with each other being formed from a single sheet of material bent along the edge marked c.

It will be noticed from the figures that an imaginary line joining the centers of the two disks constitutes the long or longitudinal axis of the article which is longer in that direction than its width. This longitudinal axis may be considered the center line. The aperture at F in the cover piece is substantially symmetrical about said longitudinal center' line as shown, it in this way showing contiguous portions of both disks and showing the lower disk A to best advantage. The cover piece aperture, moreover, is shown extending entirely to the border of the cover piece as it may well do with the particular arrangement of disks `herein disclosed.

In the present improvement the two disks are not relatively mounted as in said prior patent with the center of .each disk entirely outside of the other, but on the contrary at least one of the disks, and preferably both of them, is mounted as shown to rotate about a center located between the center and circumference of the other disk. Thus the center D2 of the lower disk A is within the circumference of the upper disk B and is' concealed thereby. Likewise the center or pivot D of the disk B is located within the circumference of the disk A. This arrangement coperates advantageously with the provision of both cover and back pieces since thereby the upper disk B is enabled to be pivoted to the cover piece by the pivot D and the lower disk A pivoted to the back piece by pivot D2.

The described arrangement of disks and supporting pieces is such that when the cover and back piece are integral, they may be opened up about their fold c thus separating the disksV and disclosing the interior. When, however, it is desired to permanently close and secure the cover and back pieces together with the disks between them, this may easily be done by an adhesive applied between the pieces at the points z', 7l for example.

It will be understood that the disks are independently rotatable and are preferably rotated by hand. To assist this each disky is made to extend beyond the border of the support. Thus the support is slitted at E at the left to permit the disk B to project through the fold o. Similarly allowance is made for the projection of disk A as shown. In addition to the changeable pictures at the front seen through the aperture in the cover piece, portions of the disks reverse sides may also be disclosed by means of apertures formed in the back piece. For example at Gr, H, are shown two apertures in the back piece, through the first of which disk B is seen and through the second of which disk A is seen. Whatever may be shown on the back of the disks will be changed with respect to apertures Gr, H when the disks are rotated. Instead of pictures, phrases or rhymes might be applied to the rear of the disks and such rhymes might in some way relate to the pictures which are shown at the front. Thus on disks B and A respectively corresponding to their positions which disclose the pussy cat in front, might be the following lines:

Iussy if you give it milk Will purr in great delight. In the case of the billy goat, the following lines might be inscribed:

Dont ever tease your goat or it Will butt with all its might.` Similarly other lines might be inscribed for other pictures such as those of the bunny rabbit, inuley cow and puppy dog. By this arrangement when the pictures are in improper adjustment at the front, the

' lines will be in improper adjustment at the rear and they could be so worded as to affore certain amusement.

Broadly speaking the feature last referred to involves in combination an apertured cover piece, an apertured back piece and a pair of independently rotatable disks between said pieces, both disks showing in the apertures at both front and back.

In the modification of Figs. 4 to 7 the cover and back pieces. are generally circular or oval instead of square as in the other figures, and in consequence the two are not formed of an integral piece bent at one of the edges, but on the contrary are not integral. Otherwise the previous description of Figs. l to 3 suitably applies to Figs. 4 to 7. What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: j

l. A toy or game comprising in combination an apertured cover piece and a plurality of picture disks pivotally mounted behind said cover piece, contiguous portions of both said disks showing behind the aperture of said cover piece.

2. A toy or game comprising in combination an apertured cover piece, a back piece, and a plurality of picture disks pivotally cover piece mounted between said back piece and said cover piece, contiguous portions of both said disks showing behind the aperture of said cover piece. Y

3. A toy or game comprising in combination a support and a pair of picture disks, said support consisting of an apertured cover piece and a back piece integral therewith, and said disks pivotally mounted at separated centers between said cover and back pieces.

4. A toy or gaine comprising in combination a support and a pair of picture disks, said support consisting of an apertured cover piece and a back piece integral therewith, and said disks pivotally mounted at separated centers between said cover and back pieces, the aperture in said cover piece being substantially symmetrical about the center line of said disks, and located to show contiguous portions of both disks.

5. A toy or game comprising in combination a support and a pair of picture disks, said support consisting of an apertured and a backpiece integral therewith, and said disks pivotally mounted at separated centers between said cover and back pieces, the aperture in said cover piece being substantially symmetrical about the center line of said disks, arranged to extend at one side entirely to the border of said cover piece, and located to show contiguous portions of both disks. 6. A toy or game comprising in combination with a support, a pair of overlapping picture disks at least one of which is mounted to rotate about a center located between the center and'circumference of the other.

7. A toy or game comprising in combination with a support, a pair of overlapping picture disks at least one of which is mounted to rotate about a center located between the center and circumference of the other, said support comprising a cover piece and back piece, with a pivot on each for thevrespective disks, and said cover piece being shaped to expose contiguous portions of the two disks.

8. A toy or game comprising in combination an integral support folded to form cover and back pieces, a pair of overlapping picture disks between said cover and back, at least one of which disks is mounted to rotate about a center located between the center and circumference of the other disk, the upper disk being pivoted to the cover piece and the lower disk to the back piece, and said cover piece being yapertured to disclose contiguous parts of both disks.

9. A toy or game comprising in combinay tate about a center'located between theV cen- 130 ter and circumference of the other disk, the upper disk being pivoted to tbe cover piece and the lower disk to the back piece, and said cover piece being apertured to disclose contiguous parts of both disks, and means for securing the cover and back pieces together with the disks between them.

A toy or game comprising in combination an integral support folded to form cover and back pieces, a pair of overlapping picture disks between said cover and back, at least one of which disks is mounted to rotate about a center located between the center and circumference of the other disk, the upper disk being pivoted to the cover piece and the lower disk to the back piece, and said cover piece being apertured to disclose contiguous parts of both disks, the fold of said support being slitted to permit the projection of one disk for rotating it, and the other disk also projecting for the same purpose.

ll. A toy or game comprising in combination an integral support folded to form cover and back pieces, a pair of overlapping Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by

picture disks between said cover and back, at least one of which disks is mounted to rotate about a center located between the center and circumference of the other disk, the upper disk being pivoted to the cover piece and the lower disk to the back piece, and said cover piece being apertured to disclose contiguous parts of both disks, and said back piece being apertured to disclose parts of the disks reverse sides.

A toy or game comprising in combination an apertured cover piece, an apertured back piece, and a pair of independently rotatable disks between said pieces, both disks showing in the apertures at both front and back, and both disks having subject matter impressed upon both the front and back surfaces thereof, visible through said apertures.
