No. 343,496. Patented June 8, 1886.

ALFRED EMILE .II .IGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
PATENT FFICE.
ASSIGNOR TO ELISHA G.
sELoHoW, or SAME PLACE.
GAME-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,496, dated June 8, 1886.
Application filed March 16, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, Armani) Samoan, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Game-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved gameboard in which three or more games are combined in book form for convenience, as hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved game-board, showing the same opened and with the fly-leavcs or covers partly separated. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the opened game-board. Fig. 3 is a crosssection through the game-board, showing the same nearly closed.
The body or central portion of my improved book-shaped game-board consists of two sunken and hinged panels, A B, such as are sometimes employed in combined chess and backgammon boards.
Heretofore in combined chess and backgammon boards the sunken panels A B have been so formed and connected as to represent, when folded, two books of uniform size and appearance, the hinge-connection being arranged at the edgewhieh represents the outer vertical margin of the book-leaves. That arrangement of sunken panels is the most suitable aud convenient where only two games are combined in one board, the outer sides of the opened panels thus affording a smooth continuous surface for chess or checkers, while the inner or sunken sides of the panels are arranged for backgammon.
By my invention, instead of hinging the sunken panels A B at their outer margins, as heretofore, I hinge them at the margin which corresponds with the back of the book, and I. also attach two fly-leaves or covers, 0 and D, the whole being arranged to represent a single book. The outer side of the panel A and'the inner side of the fly-leaf or cover 0 together form a nearly continuous surface on which a game-as, parehesi, forinstance isdelineated. The outer side of the panel B and the inner side of the fly-leaf or cover D form together another surface for the game of go- (No model.)
bang. or for chess or checkers. The inner or opposing surfaces of the panels A and B afford a field for the game of backgammon. It will be understood, of course, that the games above mentioned may be replaced by others, if preferred, it being only necessary to delineate on the panels A B and fly-leaves G D the appropriate designs or charts for the desired games. These designs orcharts may be drawn on paper, leather, or other suitable material that can be pasted, glued, or cemented to the surfaces of the panels and fly-1eaves composing the garlic-board.
By opening the game-board at the center and placing it upon a table with the inner sides of the panels A B downward, as shown in Fig. 1, the fly-leaves or covcrsO and D can be turned to the right or the left, so as to expose either of two games for use. \Vhile the board is in [his position, the panels A. and B afford a firm and level support for the leaves or covers 0 and D, and the cover 0 or cover D, as the case may be, bridges the joint a between the panels A and B, so as to presentja practically even and continuous surface for the game. By reversing the position of the unfolded board, so that it will rest on the covers O D with the inner surfaces of the panels A B uppermost, as shown in Fig. 2, another game, preferably backgamn'ion, will be presented.
The interior of the sunken panels A B, be sides affording a surface for a game, also serves as a receptacle for ehessinen, checkers, and other game appliances.
If preferred, the exterior surfacesof thefly-leaves or coversO D may be appropriately finished and ornamented, or some suitable game or games may be delineated thereon.
The exposed edges of the panels A B can be marbled or otherwise treated to represent the edges of a book, and the hinged margin or back or the outer side of one of the covers may have a suitable title displayed.
It will be observed thatthegame-board, when folded, has the appearance of a single book, and when unfolded for use presents ac0nvenient and varied source of amusement.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A game-board composed of two central hinged panels having agame-chart delineated on their inner sides, and fly-leaves or covers sunken panels and the contiguous sides of hinged to said panels with game charts dethe panels and fly-lenves or covers being pro- ]ineated 011 the inner sides of the covers or vided with gainecharts, substantially as defiyleaves and the adjacent outer sides of the i scribed.
5 central panels, the Whole forming a game- In testimony \vhereofIaffix my signalurein 15 board presenting the appearance of a single presence of two Witnesses. book, substantially as described. ALFRED EMILE SELIGER.
2. A game-board composed of two sunken Vitnessos: panels hinged at one edge and provided with H. W. S. PELL,
IO fly-leaves 0r covers, the inner sides of the OTTO F. SEIBOLD.
