Description
(No Model.) T. T. STURGES'.
. GAME TABLE. N0. 344,062;
Patented June 22, 1886.
UNITED STATES THOMAS T. STURGES,
PATENT OFFICE.
on NEW YORK, N. Y.
GAME-TABLE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,062, dated June 22, 1886.
Application filed March 15, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS T. STURGEs, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Game-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a table containing a box for holding the chess, checkers, or other games for amusement or recreation, and a reversible panel sliding at its edges into the tabletop. 011 one side of the panel is the checker or chess board, and also a tally-board, such as used in cribbage, and the other side of the tabletop is plain, so that when the sliding panel is reversed the table is adapted to its ordinary use as a side or center table.
This improvement is to be distinguished from the devices heretofore made, in which a table is provided with a drawer and a panel that can be lifted out and reversed, as the drawer is liable to slide out and the panel to fall out when the table-top is turned up vertically and stood aside. It is also to be distinguished from gameboxes that have a sliding cover, but not a surrounding table-top, and when the cover is reversed it does not lie flush with the edges of the box.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the improved game-table. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top with the gameboard uppermost, and Fig. 3 shows the usual form of the top.
The box to contain the chess, checkers, or other games is made of a bottom, 1, and sides 2, which form the base or bed of the table-top, and the legs 3 3 are connected to the box and to the table-top, usually by pivots, so that the table-top and box can be turned up vertically when not in use, as usual. The contour of the table-top maybe square, round, oval, or polygonal, as desired, the surface of the top being plain, and the three sides tform an open frame, and are connected together and to the box, and there are parallel slideways 5 in the inner edges of the frame, and there is a reversible Serial No. 195,238. (No model.)
panel, 6, with slides on two of its'edges, and to which panel one side piece of the frame is fastened, and said panel is made plain on one side, and with the checker or other game board 7 on the other side, and with the'tally or cribbage board 8, and the edges of this panel 6 fit the slides 5, and the slide-ribs come in the middle of the edges, so that the panel is flush with the surface of the table-top when either side is up, which is a great convenience in using the table.
The bottom of the box may have the marks usually provided for playing backgammon, the same as often found in checker-board boxes.
I do not claim a table having a number of interchangeable panels, nor doI claim a gamebox having a main central box and boxes around it and a reversible panel, upon both sides of which game-boards are placed. In my improved table the smooth level top is adapted to ordinary use, and when the central panel is drawn out and reversed, to bring the chess or checker board uppermost, the side piece of the frame that is connected to the panel fits into the other parts of the frame and is level therewith.
I claim as my invention The combination, in a table, of legs, a box supported by the legs, an open frame resting upon and three sides of which are fastened to the box, and having parallel slideways in the inner edges of the frame, a reversible panel with slides on two of its edges, and to which panel one side piece of the frame is fastened, one surface of the panel being plain and the other surface having a chess or other game board, the surface of the panel being level with the surface of the frame when either side is uppermost, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 3d day of March, 1886.
THOMAS T. STURGES.
