APPLICATION FILED IUIY I9. IsIe.

'IIIIIIIH FRANK D. SPOTSWOOD, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
PUZZLE-PICTURE.
nagaan.
Appli-cation led July 19, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1, FRANK D. Sro'rswoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzle- Pictures, of which the following is a specication.
rlhis invention has as its object to provide a novelty in the nature of a. puzzle picture which will be amusing and instructive to children and which may be employed effectively as an advertising medium. |1`he article embodying the present invention is, briefly stated, in the nature of a sheet of cardboard or other suitable material having printed thereon segments of a picture of circular or some other definite outline and also having printed thereon the representation 'of a picture frame, the central portion of which is left blank and which blank area is of the outline and dimensions of the picture which is to be formed from the cut out and assembled segments referred to.
It is one aim of the present invention to provide an article of this class which may be produced at a very low cost and which may be packed with articles of merchandise or by itself sent through the mails in a form similar to the ordinary kinds of folded advertising postal cards.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof in its unfolded condition.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of that portion of the article which bears the representation of a picture frame and illustrating the completed picture produced by cutting out and assembling the segments shown in Fig. 2.
As before stated, the article is in the nature of a sheet of cardboard or other suitable flexible material which may be readily cut with a pair of scissors. The sheet above referred to is indicated in general by the reference numeral 1 and the picture segments heretofore mentioned as also the representation of a picture frame, are printed or otherwise depicted upon one face o`f the said sheet, the sheet being provided midway between its ends with a line of perforations 2 permitting of the sheet being readily folded along the said line and also permitting of that portion of the sheet Specification of Letters Patent.

which bears the representation of a picture frame being separated from the remainder of the sheet and being retained by the child producing the picture. The picture segments above referred to are indicated in general by the numeral 3 and, as stated, are printed or otherwise depicted upon the face of the sheet and these segments are promiscuously arranged at one side of the line of perforations 2 and the end of the sheet at this side thereof may bear the directions to be followed in cutting out the picture segments and forming the completed picture and, if desired, may also bear advertising matter. ated by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the obverse side of the sheet may be printed in a manner to permit of its use as a postal card or the said face may bear any suitable advertising mattei' or the printed matter' adapting the sheet for use in the manner of a postal card may be printed at one side of the middle of the said obverse face of the sheet and suitable advertising matter may be printed at the other side of the middle of the said face. Two of the segments shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings are indicated specificallv one by the numeral 3 and the other by the numeral 3b and these particular segments will presently be more specifically referred to.
As stated, one face of the sheet has printed thereon at one side of the line of perforations 2 a representation of a picture frame, as indicated by the numeral 4, and
Furthermore, as will be appreci- I within this frame there is left a blank space or area indicated at 5 which is here shown defined by a circle, although this space may be defined by some other outline if found desirable. It is preferable, however, that the outline defining the space be curvilinear for a reason which will presently be made apparent. Vithin the space 5 there are printed two or more lines 6 which in conjunction with the outline defining the space, and which outline is indicated by the numeral 7, define the outline of one of the segments 3 and in the angle between the lines 6 there is printed the numeral 1 or some other suitable designating character' and there is also printed within the space 5 at one side of the angle defined by the said line 6, the numeral 2 or some other suitable designating character. Referring now to the segments which are indicated specifically by the reference numerals 3a and 3b, it will be observed that the irst mentioned one of these segments bears the numeral 1 and that the second bears the numeral 2. In the use of the article a child furnished with the same will separate the two portions of the sheet along the line of perforations 2 and will then carevfully cut out the segments 3. After these segments have been cut out the segment 3l is placed upon a sheet of paper, table, or any other convenient support in substantially the same position as indicated by the lines 6 in the space 5. Next the segment 3b which bears the numeral 2 is placed beside the segment 3a in the position which it would occupy if one oi' its straight edges were in registration with that one of the lines 6 adjacent which the numeral 2 within the space 5 is located. Then the child will assemble the other segments around the segments 3a and 3b until the complete picture is formed. He will then again take up the segment 32P which bears the designating'numeral l and after having applied paste to the obverse side thereof will carefully place the said segment within the angle between the lines 6 and with its straight edges registering with the said lines and its curvilinear edge registering with the line 7. Having secured the segment 3a in place Within the space 5 in the manner stated, the child will next secure in place the segment 2 and will repeat this operation as concerns all of the remaining segments so that when all of the segments have been assembled there will have been produced al complete picture apparently mounted within a frame as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
It will be understood from the foregoing description of the invention that the child is afforded no guidance in assembling the segments after the segments 3a and 3" have been placed in position except, however, that he will know the outline which the completed picture will have by reference to the line 7 bounding the said space 5 and will, ot course, understand that the curvilinear edge of each segment must register with some portion of this line.
It will be understood that it is not absolutely essential that every one of the segments have a curvilinear edge although it is desirable that a greater number of the segments have such an edge for registration with the line 7. It will further be understood that the position of only one of the segments may be indicated within the space 5 or that the positions of more than two ot the segments may be indicated, as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An article of the class described comprising a sheet having a blank area ,delined thereon of a denite outline, the said sheet having upon another portion segments of a complete picture which segments will form said picture when separated from the sheet and properly relatively assembled within the outline of the area, the complete picture being of the same outline and dimensions as the said blank area.
2. An article of the class described comprising a sheet having a blank area deined thereon of al deiinite curvilinear outline, the said sheet having upon another portion segments of a complete picture which segments will lorm said picture when separated 'from the sheet and properly relatively assembled within the outline ot the area, the complete picture being olil the saine outline and dimensi ons as the said blank area.
3. An article of the class described comprising a sheet having a blank area defined thereon of a definite curvilinear outline, the s'aid sheet having upon another portion segments of a complete picture which segments will form said picture when separated from the sheet and properly relatively assembled within the outline of the area, the complete picture being of the same outline and dimensions as the said blank area, the majority of said segments each having an edge for registration. with the margin of the said blank area.
4. An article of the class described comprising a sheet having a blank area defined thereon of a deiinite outline, the said sheet having upon another portion segments of a complete picture which segments will form said picture when separated from the sheet and properly relatively assembled within the outline of the area, the complete picture being of the same outline and dimensions as the said blank area, the face of the sheet having within the area lines defining the position of a dei'inite one of said segments.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
