UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOY OR ORNAMENTAL BIRD OR WINGED ANIMAL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 507,381, dated October 2 l, 1893.
Application filed April 5, 1893. Serial No. 469,190- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. NEWTON, of Morison, in the count-y of Hampden and State of Massachusettahave invented a new and Improved Toy or Ornamental Bird or Winged Animal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved toy or ornamental bird or winged animal, which is simple and durable in construction, and designed for use as a toy or ornament.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in 'both the figures.
Figure 1 is afront viewof the improvement as arranged on a' permanent flag-pole; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the improvement with parts in section.
The improved ornament is made in outline the shape of a bird or other winged animal, preferably an eagle, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the said ornament having a fiat body A painted or otherwise decorated to imitate the animal it is to represent. The body A is provided at its lower end with a pin B, mounted to turn in suitable bearings arranged in a suitable support, for example the upper end of the flag-pole O, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The body A is provided with a spindle D, carrythe wings E and E,
curved to form propeller blades, and arranged in opposite directions on the opposite sides of the body A, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. The body A is made as flat as possible, so as to hold the wings E and E, to the wind, to permit the latter to act on the propeller blades forming the wings, so as to rotate the wings and consequently the spindle D.
The article will afford amusement as a toy as children may rotate the body and wings and it also forms a very pretty ornament.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An ornament or toy body mounted to turn, shaft-and flattened in the direction of said shaft whereby to retain said shaft in the line of the wind and wing like vanes at the ends of said shaft formed to provide propeller blades for the action of the wind substantially as set forth.
2. An ornament or toy, substantially as described, consisting of the staff or rod the body pivoted to one end thereof and provided with a transverse shaft and flattened in the direction of said shaft and wings secured to the ends of said shaft and fashioned to form propeller blades substantially as set forth.
