UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WV. LONG, OF SPRINGFIELD, OI-IIO.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,569, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed July 28, 1888. Serial No. 281,324. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID W. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is partly a vertical section and partly a side View. Fig. 2 is a detail showing a blank of the metal socketpiece. Fig. 3 is also a detail, and shows the socket-piece folded for use.
This invention has relation to Whirligig toys; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the round stem, to the upper end of which is secured a block, 13, having a plain upper face. The lower end of the stem is squared and provided with a perforation, c.
D represents an ellipsoidal metallic shell having bearing-apertures e e in its ends and an opening, g, at one side, as shown. This gage the rectangular end of the stem.
Z, serves to hold the weight in place. Secured to the stem within the shell is a cord, 'm, which passes out through the opening 9 at the side.
S indicates a sheet-metal socket-piece or holder, which consists of the lateral wings w and the socket '1', having parallel sides. This is secured to the upper surface of the block B by means of small tacks passing through the wings into said block. This socket-piece is formed of a single blank of sheet metal, as shown at V, bent upon itself and having the flanges bent outward, as indicated in the drawings. This socket serves to hold small plain figures of horses, birds, or other devices, which, when the cord is turned around the stem, are quickly pulled through the opening in the shell held in the left hand, and will be rapidly turned, affording amusement to young children.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The twirling toy consisting of the stem having at its one end the block, upon which is secured the socket having parallel sides and lateral wings, the metallic ellipsoidal shell having bearings for the stem and a lateral opening, and the cord wound around said stem and extending through said opening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID W. LONG.
