UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. STOOKBURGER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
EXERClSlNG-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,128, dated June 11, 1889. Application filed January 4, 1889. gerial No. 295,237. (No model.)
T0 or whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. STOCK- BURGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in Which Figure 1 is a View showing the bar grasped by the hands. Fig. 2 is a like view illustrating the spring of the bar by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing some of the disks removed and the bar broken. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of one end of the bar and a part of the attaching-bar shown detached.
The present invention has relation to exercising-bars; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawingsfA represents the bar proper, and is formed of spring material, preferably of hickory or ash wood, and should be from four to eight feet in length. To the ends of the bar A are securely attached the metal bars or rods a, upon which bars or rods are located the metal disks B. These disks are substantially of the form shown, and may be of any desired size and weight. The disks designed to be placed on the outer portions of the bars or rods a are each provided with collars b, which are provided with the set-screws a and are for the purpose of securely holding the disks on the rods a.
It will be seen that any desired number of disks may be placed upon the rods a, thereby changing or graduating the weight.
The ferrules O are located on the ends of the bar A, and are for the purpose of preventing the ends of the bar A from splitting.
In use the bar A is designed to be grasped by both hands and different movements of the hands and arms produced. It will be seen that by providing the spring-bar A the jar of the weights will be removed and no sudden strain will be produced.
It will be understood that my invention is designed to be used in gymnasiums and like places, or for the strengthening of the muscles. For the purpose of preventing the rods or bars a from becoming detached, the barbs c are provided. It will be seen that by attaching the disks to the bar A momentum will be added or increased to the movements of the bar.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the bar A, formed of spring material and of such a length to be grasped by both hands, the rem ovableweights B, and means for attaching said weights, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
- SAMUEL B. STOOKBURGER.
IVitnesses:
E. A. 0. SMITH, F. N. Bonn.
