JOHN CHARLES WAEHLTE, OF SACRAMENTO CITY, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-STI RRUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,466, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed April 19, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom i may concern:
Beit known that I, J. CHARLES WAEHLTE, of Sacramento City, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Satety-Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description of the inventon, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement as applied to an iron stirrup. Fig.
- 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig.
3 is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. I. is a view showing the application of my invention to a wooden stirrup.
Corresponding parts in the several ligures are denoted by like letters ot' reference.
This invention relates to so-called safetystirrups57 and it consists in certain improvements in the construction ot' the saine, which will be hereinafter t'ully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the body or bail ofthe stirrnp, and B the foot-plate. The latter is provided at one side with a recess, C, forming arms D D, between which is pivoted a roller, E. The bail provided near its upper end with openings F F, forming bearings for the ends ot' another roller, G. The rollers E and G are beaded or corrugated, as shown, or they may be replaced by beads or sectional rollers adjusted upon suitable shafts, without changing the nature ol my invention. l
The operation ol' my invention will be readily understood. The stirrup is used in the ordinary manner. If the ridershould be thrown, his foot will naturally press upon the roller E, While his toes are thrown upward against the roller G, which will revolve, thus causing the foot to slip out ofthe stirrup and enabling the rider to escape the danger ot' being dragged.
When my invention is applied to wooden stirrups I prefer to provide metallic brackets or hangers H H at the ends of recess C for the roller E, as represented in Fig. L ot' the drawlngs.
This invention is simple and effective, and my improved sal'ctystirrup may be manufactured at a cost but slightly exceeding that ot' the stil-rups now in common use.
I am aware of the patents to Gould, August l, 1865, and Williamson, October 9, 1860, and I claim nothing therein shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in sai'ety-stirrups, the combination, with the foot-plate B, provided at its rear end with longitudinal recess C,form ing arms D l) at cach end, of a corrugated or beaded roller, E, turning in the recess C upon bearings in the arms D D, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my'signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
JOHN CHARLES WAEHLTE.
