SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,108, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed November 27, 1889. Serial No. 331.731. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. GOOD- RIDGE, of the cit-y of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Safety-Stirrups, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in Stirrups; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective View of my improved stirrup. Fig. Il is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a portion of the stirrup to which the stirrupstrap may be attached through an opening 2 near the upper end of the same. The portion l is made in the form of an arc of a circle, l
the A.opposite side of the foot-rest, but which permits the foot to pass out of the stirrup in the case of the rider being thrown. The upper surface of the foot-rest is on a plane with achord ofthe are and the opening2 is directly above the center.
The central portion 5 of the foot-rest may be lled with rubber or other material bearing a roughened surface to prevent the foot from slipping.
I claim as my invention- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a stirrup-frame formed in an arc of a circle and having a foot-rest on a plane with the horizontal chord of the are, the opening between the ends of the arc constituting a passage for the foot, the opening for the supporting-strap being located at a point on a Vertical line above the center of the foot-rest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stirrup, the combination of the portion 1, having an opening 2 directly over the foot-rest, foot-rest 3, having a roughened central portion 5, and the extension 4, extending above the plane of the foot-rest, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
