To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN S. POWELL, of Marshall, in the county of Harrison and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Back-Pad, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in back pads such as are used beneath harness saddles; and the object of my invention'is to produce a back pad with a concave top to en able a saddleto fit nicely upon it, and further to produce this concavity in a cheap and simple manner and in a way to enable the pad top to be finished very neatly and without expense. 7

To these ends my invention consists of a back pad which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similarfigures of reference indicate corresponding .parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is an edge view of a back-pad made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is abroken perspective view of the top portion of the pad, showing the finish-strip raised from the hole in the pad in order that the method of shap ing the pad may be. more perfectly understood. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.

The pad 10 is, with the exception of the hole in the top to be described presently, like the ordinary pad, being made preferably of felt and it has the customary back 11. When the pad and back are secured together, a hole is made in the pad top and two crescent shaped holes 12 are cut in the back 11 on opposite sides of the center, thus leaving a top strip 13 shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, the strip beis at its edges made fast to the back 11 and to the pad by rivets 15 or other equivalent fastenings.

When the strip 13 is buckled down into the I hole and fastened as specified, a concavity 16 is formed in the top of the pad and back, which is nicely finished and which enables the saddle to ride easily on the pad.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Aback pad, comprising a pad proper and a pad back having transversely extending holes at opposite sides of its center, the outer edges of the holes being stitched together, and the strip between the holes being fastened t0 the pad at its edges so as to overlap the edges of the said holes, substantially as described.

2. A back pad, oomprisinga pad proper and a pad back having transversely extending openings at opposite sides of its center, the outer edges of the openings being stitched to the pad, and the strip between the openings being fastened to the pad so as to overlap the edges of the said openings, substantially as described.

3. The pad back herein described having-a I concave top provided on opposite sides of such top with transverse openings terminating short of the opposite edges of the said pad back and having between said transverse openings an integral portion forming an upper facing or cover'for said concave top, 'substantially as set forth.

4. A pad back having openings on opposite sides of its center, its portion between said openings being depressed forming a concave top and having an integral portion forming a cover for such concave top, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, with the pad having a hole in the top, of the pad back having holes on opposite sides of its center, the pad at the edges of the holes being stitched to the back, and the back strip formed between the holes in the pad and fastened at its edges so as to overlap the edges of the said holes, substan- Witnesses:
