TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,681, dated June 9, 1885. Application filed February 1'1, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK 0. DERR, of Moulton, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Trace-Carrier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved trace-carrier for harness; and the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, andcombination of the parts of the trace-carrier, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my new tracecarrier, showing the side, back, and crupper straps, and cockeyes-and traces of a harness in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same taken on the line we of Fig. l.
My new trace-carrier A is by preference made of malleable cast-iron. It is formed with the side loops, a b, .for the side straps of a harness, with the cross-bar c for the backstrap of the harness, and with the rear loop and keeper, d 6, for the crupper-strap of the harness. A bridge, B, is formed across the center of the trace-carrier. This is formed with the upwardly and inwardly curved horns f, the adjacent ends of which come nearly together, a space being left between them to permit the passage of the cockeyes 9, so that they may be hooked upon the horns, as shown in dotted lines in the drawings. The
bridge B, at its center, is recessed, as shown at h, and in this recess is placed the coiled spring 7;, in which is placed the spindle j, to v the upper end of which is formed or secured the head k, that is adapted, when spindle j and head k are forced upward by the spring t, to close the space between the adjacent ends of the horns f, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, so that the cockeyes g cannot become accidentally disengaged from the horns f. For convenience in depressing the head It and spindle j for taking the cockeyes out of the carrier, l form the head It with the finger-piece k, on which the thumb or finger may be placed for forcing the head andspindle downward. As Soon as the thumb .or finger is removed from the finger-piece k the spring 13 will act to instantly force the spindle and head upward and close the space between the horns f.
To place the cockeyes in the carrier, it is only necessary to place one edge of the eye upon the head It and press downward, which will cause the spring i to yield and permit the eye to pass between the head It and point of a horn.
Constructed in the manner described, it will be seen that the carrier is very convenient and practical, and that it is cheap and durable, and may be applied to any harness. 11
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bridge B, formed with the socket h, in combination with the spring i, spindle j, head It, having the finger-piece 7c, and upwardly and inwardly curved horns f, said horns having their adjacent ends or heads arranged about centrally of the carrier, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
