SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 571,894, dated November 24, 1896. i

"o all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX F. CHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Beaufort and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIame-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings, Figure 1 rep resents a portion of a haine and trace with my improved haine-hook applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectionalview of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, showing the position of the hook when the loop of the trace or tug is removed or inserted. Fig. 4 represents a similar view showing the position of the parts when the hook is applied to or removed from the hame.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of one of the hames provided, in this instance, with a fastening-bar or staple a in the usual manner.
My improved hame-hook consists of two slotted plates secured together by a connecting-bolt or rivet, which engages a slot in one of said plates. B represents one of said plates, which I will term the main plate or hookplate7 to distinguish it from the'other. The said main plate is provided at one end with a laterally-bent portion b, which forms a broad retaining-hook to engage the fastening-bar a of the hame, and adjacent to its other end the said plate is provided with an open slot b', extending preferably from a point on its upper edge intermediate the ends of the plate downwardly and then horizontally toward the end of the plate, forming a hook portion h2. B' represents the other plate, which I will designate the locking-plate, which is provided adjacent to its center with a short slot b3, through which passes a rivet or bolt B2, which secures the two plates together, but per- Serial No. 578,111. mits them to move with respect to each other. The locking-plate B is provided at one end with a laterally-turned flange b4, which, when the plates are Vin operative position, engages and overlies the retaining-hook b, formed on the plate B, as shown best in Fig. 2. The opposite end of said locking-plate is provided with an open locking-slot b5, which begins at substantially the same point as the slot b in plate B and extends downwardly farther than the slot b and then extends upward above the said slot b', as shown at b, forming a locking projection bT betweenthe end b6 of the slot and its open end, as will be seen in the drawings.
When the plates B B' are parallel, as they are when in operative position, the locking projection t7 extends directly across the slot b in the main or hook plate B, thereby prevent-- ing a link or loop of the trace, which is placed in engagement with the plates, from slipping out. In order to insert or remove the chainlink C (if a chain-trace is employed) or tho loop of any desired form of trace, the rear end of the locking-plate B is raised as far as the slot b5 will allow, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby removing the locking projection T97 from across the slot b in plate B, when portions of the two slots b' and b5 will coincide, so as to allow the loop or chain-link of the trace to be inserted or removed. This, it is obvious, could never happen while the device was in active use. As soon as the link is inserted and the plates released they will assume the position shown in Fig. l, the locking projection 197 dropping in front of the link or loop and preventing its accidental removal.
lVhen it is desired to attach the hook to a haine, the locking-plate is rotated until it lies across the main plate, as shown in Fig. 4, when the retaining-hook can be readily made to engage the fastening-bar a of the haine'.
The locking-bar is then rotated on its pivot in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 4, until the flange b4 engages the retaining-hook I) ofthe other plate, as shown in Fig. 2, the slot b3 allowing the locking-plate to make the necessary movements.
It will be understood that the hook will be attached to the hame before the link or loop ofthe trace is placed in engagement with the trace.

It will be seen that this hook is strong and durable and can be instantly attached to a llame. The attaching and detaching of the traces can also be effected quickly and easily by the use of my improved hook.
lVlia-t I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hanne-hook comprising two plates each provided with a curved open-ended slot, one of said plates having a selnieylindrical retaining-hook to engage the harne-iron, and the other plate having a ange extending at right angles to the plate, adapted to lie over said retaining' -hook7 substantially as described.
2. A haine-hook comprising two parts each having an open-ended slot and a curved portion communicating therewith forming a hook, said parts being pivotally mounted one upon the other and provided with means for detachably securing them to a haine, substantially as described.
3. Allame-hook comprising` among its members the main hookfplate having a retaininghook adapted to engage the hame and a slotted portion forming a hook for engaging a part connected with the trace and a lockingplate pivotally connected with said main plate, having a retaining-flange adapted to engage and overlie said retaining-hook and having a. locking projection adapted to lie across the slot of said main plate when the parts are in operative position, substantially as described.
4. A llame-hook comprising` amongits members, a main hook-plate having at one end a retaining-hook for engaging a part connected with the haine, and at the other end a slot forming a hook for engaging the trace, and a locking-platehaving a flange for enga-ging the said retaining-hook, a slot adapted to receive a part connected with the trace, and a locking projection adapted to extend across the slot of the said main plate, a connecting-bolt for pivotally uniting said plates, one of said plates having a slotted portion engaging said bolt, substantially as described.
