SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,996, dated November 8, 1892. Application filed June 30, 1892. Serial No. 438|573- (N0 mOdeL) To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN SWIGERT, a citizen of the United `States of America, residing at Blanchester, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in haines, the object of which is to provide an improved attachment for hames whereby the hame-tug or trace-chain may be held in engagement with a fixture carried by the hame, so as to prevent vertical movement of the trace-chain or tug afterit has been adjusted; and the invention consists in providing the haine clip or staple adjacent to the edge of the harne or plate through which the staple passes with a spring-bar which is bent so as to form at one end an eye which engages with one of the arms of the staple or clip and at the other end with a hook, so that when said spring-bar is secured to the hame clip or staple it will prevent the trace-chain or tug from becoming disengaged from the notches of the haine-clip.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of a hame provided with a clip constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the retainingbar in engagement with the main clip in full lines and in dotted lines as swung to one side.

A designates the hame, which may be of ordinary construction, and to the same is att-ached a haine clip or staple B, having recesses b, within which the loop portion of the xture attached to the llame-tug is adapted to lie, or one ofthe links of the chain when a trace-chain is used. To the upper inwardlyprojecting member c of the hame clip or staple is pivotally secured a spring-bar C, the upper end of which is formed into an eye which embraces the inwardly-projecting portion of the clip or staple, and the lower end of the spring bar or plate is formed into a hook which engages with the lower inwardly-projecting member c" of the hame-clip.

When the spring-bar is swung upwardly, the tug or trace-chain may be adjusted or placed in any of the notches in the hame clip or staple, and when the hook on the end of the spring-bar is caused to engage with the haine clip or staple the trace-chain or tug will be held in position.

It will be noted that the spring-bar is flat and that the central portion of the same is bent so that the outer edge thereof will lie centrally opposite the projecting portions adjacent to the recess in the vertical portion of the clip or staple and that the end of the spring-bar is bent down to form a convenient grasping portion.

I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide hames with devices with which the hooks to which the traces are attached engage and are held in engagement by bars or plates, and I do not claim such construction broadly; but

What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a hame, a staple B, secured thereto, the inner side of the connecting portion of said staple having notches or recesses with which the tug-eye is adapted to engage, and a flat spring-bar having one end bent around one member of the staple and the other end formed into a hook to engage the other member of the staple, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a haine, a staple having recesses, the projecting portions between said recesses extending toward the body portion of the haine a sufficient distance to provide a space between the haine and projecting portions in which the eye of the tug can move, anda iiat spring-bar pivotally attached to one ot' the side members of the staple and provided with a hook which is adapted to engage with the other side member, the portion of the flat bar between the eye and hook being bent so as to be located between the body portion of the haine and the forwardly-pro- IOO jecting portions of the staple, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
