tlnrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. PYE, OF BALDWINVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES A. SPAIN, OF TALBOTTON, GEORGIA.
HAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,157, dated November 29, 1892.
Application led August 29, 1892.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES F. PYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baldwinville, in the county of Talbot and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I'Iame Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this' specication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hame attachments, and more particularly to the providing of an improved form of trace attachment for the haines.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the character mentioned which will permit the tracechain to be readily and quickly either attached or detached from the hame and which at the same time will effeotually hold the trace when attached against possible accidental displacement.
The device is both simple and durable and will be found to be eflicient in operation.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel features of construction and in the peculiar combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating the same parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of ahame, showing my invention applied. Fig.
Figs. 3 and 4c are plan views of the fixed and rotary plates, respectively.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a hame of ordinary construction.
B is a metallic plate, which is secured in Serial No. 444.465. (No model.)
any suitable manner to the face ot' the hame at the point at which it is proposed to attach the trace-chain. Extending downward and rearwardly from the body portion of the plate B is an arm B', and passed through holes in the plate near the extreme end of this arm B are the arms of the staple C, which serve to hold the" ring C. The plate Bis also provided at its rear edge with a horizontal extension or arm D, which arm extends for a short distance beyond the outer edge of the hame and has its upper edge cut away to form a shoulder D.
E is a plate or casting pivoted at its center upon one of the legs of the staple F, the body portion of which staple extends transversely across the hame, as shown. The plate E is provided with a series of arms. In the present instance I have shown four of these arms, though it is at once evident that the number may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. These arms E3 are curved to form hooks E', all of the said hooks curving in` the same general direction and each hook being provided at its tip with an inwardly-extending lug E2, which serves to more securely retain the trace-chain G when a link of the same is in engagement with one of the hooks. In order to permit the trace to be readily attached, the edge of the hame directly above the arm D of the plate B is cut away, as shown at G The operation of the device is simple and readily understood. When it is proposed to attach the trace, a link of the same is engaged with one of the curved arms or hooks E', and plate E is then rotated until the link of the trace within the hook is brought into contact with the shoulder D', which serves to prevent the further rotation of the plate E and prevents the possibility of the trace becoming accidentally detached when the trace is slackened, as is frequently the case with some of the trace-fasteners in use. Vthen it is desired I to unfasten the trace, rit is simply necessary that the plate E be turned backward until the hook which is in engagementwiththe trace is brought to the point at which the hame is cut away, at G', when the same may be removed readily from the hook.
Having thus described my invention, what IOC I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Lettially as described, and for lche purpose speciters Patent, isfled. IO
In a device of the character described, in Intestirnony whereof:` Iafx my signature in combination, the haine, the plate B, secured presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 thereto and provided with arm or extension JAMES F. PYE.
D, having shoulder D', and the plate E, pivoted Witnesses: as described and provided with a series of JOHN P. LEONARD,
hooks, all arranged and operating substan- C. H. MATTHEWS.
