Be it known that I, THOMAS COX HAOKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Queen Anile, in the county of Queen Annes, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in harness, and particularly to hames.

The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is' a perspective view of a hame embodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a hame embodying another form of my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the draft plate and hook.

Referring to the drawings, A is the hame, constructed in the usual manner and provided with a bent hame-iron c, having an eye a at the lower end for the hame-strap to pass through. The upper end of the hame is provided with a series of slots or holes a2, through which the neck-strap passes, these holes being formed by cutting flat recesses in the wooden portion of the hame, which recesses are covered by the bent haine-iron a.

B is a draft-plate having a tubular portion b, a central flattened portion b', anda curved outer portion b2, the latter being provided with a series of keyhole-slots b3, arranged with their circular portions outward. and the slots sloping inward and upward. In the tubular portion l) is inserted a pintle-rod c, which may be made as an ordinary staple, having two ends driven into the wooden portion of the hame and riveted, as shown in Fig. l, in which case an eye D is also secured in the wood to hold a ring (l, to which the neck-chains may be secured, or in my improved form (shown in Fig. 2) the pintle C is made with a loop c, which extends outward, as shown, and holds the ring d for the neck-chains, thereby requiring only two holes,

ing the weakening of the hame to that extent, while at the same time making a saving in labor necessary in reiitting.

Into any desired one of the keyhole-slots in the plate B may be inserted a draft-hook E, which has two hooked ends e and e arranged in planes at right angles to each other, one, e, lying in a vertical plane with its end (which is flattened out, as shown) projecting upward, while the other hook, el, lying in a horizontal plane has its end projecting outward. In this way a straight pull on the hook takes place, while at the same time the ends of the hooks cannot rub the horse. Furthermore, the bend in the draft-plate B assists in holding the hook E away from the animals side, which would not be the case if it were bent flat against the hame-iron a.

To prevent the draft-hook from accidentally slipping out of its keyhole-slot, its outer end is provided with a ward or stud e2, which when the hook is properly rotated will pass through the slot portion of the keyhole-slot,

but which when the hook is in itsI normal position will not be opposite the slot portion of the said keyhole-slot. In order to prevent the hook E from slipping, and thereby becoming disengaged from its keyhole-slot, I may provide the shank with a ward or stud es, as shown in Fig. 2. l

It will be obvious that by my construction the tugs or traces may be adjusted up or down on the hames by moving the draft-hook E up or down in the various holes in the draftplate B, thus properly applying the strain to the horses shoulder.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with a hame, a draft plate secured to the hame and provided with a series of key-hole slots, of a draft device having a hook at opposite ends and arranged to connect the hame with the trace end, the forward end of said draft device engaging the key-hole slots in the draft plate and having a pair of studs on its upper surface, as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with a hame, a draft the draft plate when in its normal position, 1o substantially as described.
