Description

(No Model.) J. s. NELSON TRIMMING FOR HALTERS AND BRIDLES. I
No; 252,500. Patented Jan. 17,1882. ig.1.
N. FETIRS Hlulo-Uflvognphen Wuhingiolx D. C.
UNITED STATES JAMES S. NELSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO I. M. HATOHER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF SAME PLACE.
'TRlMMING FOR HALTERS AND BRlDLE S.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,500, dated January 17, 1882. Application filed May 6,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, residing at Springfield, in thecounty ofOlarke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful I mprovements in Halter-Trimmiugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in metallic i'asteniugs, particularly designed for use in connection with halters, bridles, &c., as will be hereinafter more fully set forth; and it has for its object to provide a simple and cheap method or means of uniting the several pieces which constitute horse-head gears of the character herein designated.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a halter constructed with my improved fastening, forming the means of uniting the several straps at their junctures; Fig. 2, a plan view of one form of the fastening which is used at certain portions of the halter; and Fig. 3, a. like view of a modified form of the same, which is adapted to be applied at other parts of the halter.
The letter A designates a halter, which is of the ordinary approved form.
The letter B indicates the fastening or coupling, which is applied to thejunotifre of the chin-strap and tie-rein, and which consists of aeast or other suitable metallic approximately E, near one end, and a longitudinal bar, F,
united with the said bar E and with one endof the frame proper. Each of the said bars is provided with aprojectin g stud or pin, D, similar to the stud D, and which bars are also depressed beneath the surface or upper plane of their frame 0.
To construct a halter in connection with my improved fastener, I apply the same in the following manner: First, at the juncture of thechin-strap and the tie-rein I apply the frame B by'placing the same in an upright position and passing the said chin-strap transversely across the frame B, passing it behind the sides of the frame and over the central bar, F. The tie'rein is then brought down from the throatlatch and carried behind the upper cross-bar of the frame, over the bars E, F, and G, (as also the chin-strap,) passing down behind the lower bar or end of the frame proper, the said tie-rein having a perforation adapted to allow the stud D to project thiough and complete the fastening. The application of the'part O to the halter is made by passing the chin-and nose strap transversely under and over its sides and the bar F, respectively, a hole beingtbrmed therein for the passage of thelower stud D. The cheek strap is then brought down behind the upper cross-piece of the frame and slipped over the upper stud D, a hole being provided therein for thepurpose. At the intersection of the cheek-strap and the throat-latch the connection is'similarly made, as last described, the cheek-strap in this instance being applied, as is the chin-and-nose strap and the throat latch, by passing it. behind the end of'tlie frame proper and over the bar E and stud D. i
Having thus described my invention. what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastening for halters and bridles, (:OliSisting of an approximately rectangular frame having a. longitudinal piece running trcin one end thereof to and connecting with a cross-bar near the other end, the part s being provided respectively with a stud or pin and lying in a different plane from the frame proper, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. NELSON.
