PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. KENNY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MARTINGALE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 773, O 15, dated October 25, 1904. A plicati n filed January 27, 1904:. $erial No. 190,764. (No model.)
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. IIENNYJL citizen. of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Martingales, of which the following is a specification suchas will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved martingale-headstall for use on polo ponies wherebya; pony in playing the game of polo may be easily controlled and guided without bridle or bridle-bits; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is full-y disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form apart, in which the separate parts of my improvementare designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a View of a horse provided with my improved martingale; Fig. 2, a plan view of a pulley used in the construction of the martingale, and Fig. 3 a front view of a breast-strap which forms a part of the martingale.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide a headstall comprising side members a, a back head-band a a front head-band (1 a throat latch or strap (4*, and a nose-band a The side members a are connected with the nose-band a at a in the usual or any desired manner and secured 'to the nose-band forwardly of the point where the sidemembers a are connected with the nose-band, and at each side is a pulley b. I also provide a breast-strap 0, which is divided at c to form two branch members 0 leys 6, connected with the nose-band a of the headstall and connected with the side membersa of the headstall near the top thereof, as shown at 6Z3, this connection being made by buckles or in any desired manner.
The main part or side portion of the martingale-rein d is preferably made round, while the part d thereof is preferably made fiat; but the entire rein may be made round, if desired. The breast-strap c is connected with the saddle-girth e in the usual or any desired manner; but, as shown in the drawings, I provide a supplemental strap f, having a buckle f at one end, whereby a loop f is formed through which the girth e is passed, and the supplemental strap f is also in the form of construction shown divided at f 3 to form branch members f which are .passed around the neck of the horse, as shown in Fig. 1, and the strap 0 is'secured to the strap f at a. 7
By means of this construction I provide a martingale which may be applied to an ordinary headstall-halter without bits or bridlereins and may be used in this manner, if de-.
It is a well-known fact that polo ponies are guided entirely by the head and neck and no bits are desired or employed, and my improvement is particularly adapted for use for this purpose. g
My improved martingale is strong and durable and cannot be easily or accidentally broken, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made with out departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention; what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. A headstall for horses provided with a nose-band, pulleys secured to'said nose-band at the opposite sides, martingale-reins secured to the headstall above said pulleys and passed therethrough, a breast-strap having branches provided with pulleys through which said reins are passed, and means to connect the hueast-strap with a saddle-girth, substantially as shown and described.
2. A headstall for horses provided with a nose-band, pulleys secured to said nose-band at the opposite sides, martingale-reins secured to the headstall above said pulleys and passed therethrough, and a breast strap having branches provided With pulleys through Which said reins are passed, and said breaststrap being also provided With a su pplemental strap adapted to be connected with a saddle-girth and provided With branch members Which are adapted to be passed around the neck of a horse, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presl 5 ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 25th day of January, 190* JOHN I. KENNY.
