o. H. MUNTZ.
BRIDLE BIT.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER H. MUNTZ, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN OR TO HARRY D. v
Y SQUIRES, OF SAME PLACE.
BRIDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,526, dated October 10, 1893.
i Application met May 2o. 189s. 'serai No. 474,945. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, OLIVER H. MUNTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the countyof Allegheny and State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle-Bits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which Io it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bridle bits.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable bit adapted to be used in I5 connection with a chin strap, or the extension of a check rein, and as a substitute for the ordinary check rein forholding up the horses head. It is illustratedl in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, is a front View in elevation of the bridle bit showing chin strap in connection therewith; Fig. 2 a plan view; Figs. 3 and 4 details of bit ring.
Referring to the drawings A, is the mouth piece made ot' rubber, leather, iron or any other suitable material.
B, is a broken cheek ring having at each of its ends a angeD,an'd from one of its ends a slotted arm E. The ends of the cheek ring 3o are connected by a post O. The mouth piece A, has looped ends a', which are attached to and swing on the posts C, and are held between the anges D.
G, is the slot in the pendent arm E.
H, is a chin strap of the usual kind, being somewhat broader in the middle than at its ends, and is provided with metal loops t', or other suitable means at its ends, to connect with a check rein, not shown. The slots Gr, of 4o the arms E, are constructed of such size that the chin strap can readily pass through them.
The arms F., extend out a short distance on either side of the animals mouth, the chin strap passing up through the arms. This causes that strap to be held in the desired position on the animals chin. The ends of the chin strap after passing through the arms E, are attached to the'check rein. It will be seen more particularly by reference to 'the plan view that the slotted arms extend for- 5o ward from the cheek rings and at right angles to the bit, and that the slots are open at right angles to the posts connecting the cheek rings, so that thechinstrapis placed under the chin of the animal forward of the bit withits buckled ends extending up through said slots and then connecting with the check reins which come down on the front of the horses head between its ears. By this construction a substitute for the ordinary check rein is 0btained and the horses head held up with greater ease and the pain to the animal attendant upon the use of the ordinary check rein, thus obviated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A check device consisting, in combination with a bridle bit or mouth piece, of cheek rings provided With slotted arms extending forward from said rings along the nose of the animal and at right angles to the bit and the ring posts, and a strap placed underthe chin ofthe animal with its ends passed up through said slotted arms and adapted to connect with the check rein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER H. MUNTZ.
