To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN GARRETT RYcK- HAN, of Knappa, in the county of Olatsop and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Harness Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a rein-guard for harness, particularly for double harness; and the object of the invention is to provide such an attachment that will not interfere to the slightest extent with the action of the reins upon a bit and which will render it almost impossible for the reins to become entangled with or to pass under the pole or tongue of the vehicle.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a rein-guard attachable to harness and that may be adjusted to any size of harness and wherein no springs, wire, or bars are employed that would tend to injure a horse.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the device to a harness. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of a portion of a harness and the application of the improved device to the harness.

The device consists of a strap 10, one end of which is provided with a buckle 11, forming a loop 12, the said loop carrying an eye 13, and the said eye in its turn acting as a support for a ring 14. At or near the central por-, tion of the strap 10 provision is made for the attachment of a ring 16, the ring 16 being at right angles to the end ring 14. For this purpose the ring 10 is held in a socket 15, which extends at a right angle to the socket formed by the eye 13, and at the end of the strap opposite that at which the ring 14 is placed a second buckle 17 is provided, forming a loop or return-section 18, adapted to carry a snap 19 or the equivalent of the same.

In the application of the device to a double harness, to which it is particularly adaptable, the device is attached by means of the ring 14 to the throat-latch A of the bridle and by means of the snap 19 to a ring or a suitable projection from the hames B of the harness, the ring 16 resting against the neck of the animal harnessed.

The attachment is preferably made only to the inner portion of the harness, or that portion of the harness which would face an adjacent animal of a team. The outer reins D and E of the harness of a team of animals are conducted rearward in the usual manner; but the inner rein D of one animal-the off horse, for exampleis carried through the ring 16 belonging to the guide attachment of the harness of the said animal and then through the hame-ring of the harness of the nigh horse, the inner driving-reins D and E being secured in the usual manner to the outer driving-reins D and E in a double harness, and the inner and outer driving reins of both animals are connected in like manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a harness the combination, with the hames, the bridle, and the driving-rein, of a strap one end of which is secured to the bridle, and the other end to the hames, and a guide secured to the central portion of said strap, the driving-rein passing through said guide whereby a support for the rein will be provided a short distance from and in front of the hames.

2. A harness attachment, comprisingaflexible strap of a length to reach from the bridle to the hames and provided with means at its ends for securing it to the bridle and hames, and with a ring intermediate of its ends, through which one of the reins is adapted to pass, substantially as described.

3. A harness attachment, consisting ofa flexible strap of a length to reach from the throat-latch of the bridle to the hames, the said strap being provided with a ring at one end through which the throat-latch of a bridle is adapted to be passed, a snap-hook at its other end for engaginga ring of the hames, and a ring intermediate of its ends, through which one of the reins is adapted to be passed, substantially as described.

4. A harness attachment, consisting of a flexible strap of a length to reach from the throat-latch of the bridle to the hames and different horses and the position of the guide provided With means at its ends for securing with respect to the ends of the strap mainit to the throat-latch and halnes, and intertained, as set forth.
