BRIDLE-BIT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,959, dated September 12, 1893.

Application filed April 26, 1893. Serial No.4=72,442. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMAN ZAHL, of Momence, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bridle-Bit, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bridle bit; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken through the center of the links.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective attachment for bridles, by means of which headstrong and vicious horses may be more readily restrained.

My invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.

The bit A, is of ordinary construction, and upon the bar of the bit, at either end, is placed a link B, having the oblong aperture 0. and transverse slots b b, at the ends for receiving straps. The links are preferably curved, as shown, the convex edge being arranged in front. The saidlinks B are suspended by the check reins O, passing through the transverse slots 1), b, thence over the crown and back to the hook on the saddle. The large rings at the outer ends of the bit are attached to the head-stall.

The lower ends of the links B are connected by a strap D, which buckles underneath the lower jaw of a horse, and the said strap D is provided with a pad E, which is interposed between the strap and the jaw of the horse, the pad being secured to the strap by loops 0.

My improvement does the checking from under the jaw, thus saving or doing away with the small check bit which has been, and is still used, thus making the check easier and more secure either for a tender mouthed horse or for a hard mouthedhorse.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A bridle bit comprising two separate and independent longitudinally slotted side links provided with transverse slots at their upper and lower ends, the upper slots being for the cheek straps, a chin strap secured in the lower slots and a bit proper extending through the longitudinal slots and provided with rings at its ends, substantiallyas set forth.
