CHECKREIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,597, dated April 2, 1895.
Application filed .Tuly 30, 1894. Serial No. 518.926. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWIN E. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in thecounty of Cumberland and State 0f Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkreins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to bridles with overhead checks and its purpose is to relieve the strain upon the check which may result'from any sudden movement or particular position of the head of the horse. Y This I purpose to accomplish by substituting for the separate bit commonly used with this kind of check an elastic chin strap.
The following description refers to the drawings, in which--4 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bridle; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3, a detail showing the construction of the chin strap.
a, b and f represent respectively the throatlatch, cheek strap and bit each of which is of the ordinary construction.
c is the overhead check which is that in common use, being bifurcated in its lower portion. These bifurcations may be connected, as shown in Fig. 2, by a nose strap cZ. The bifurcations of the check are provided at the lower ends with buckles by which they are attached to the ends of the chin strap either directly or through the interposition of aring o. The chin' strap Zo is of sufficient length to pass around the chin of the horse, either end being connected with the bifurcation of the check rein, as already stated, and passing through the loops e, c which are secured at their upper ends to the cheek straps as shown in Fig. l. The chin strap consists of two pieces or straps k, lo connected, as already stated, at one end to the bifurcations of the check rein, while at their rear ends they are united by some elastic material. As shown in the drawings, they are connected by means of a rubber band h. Inside the chin strap is the padded strap n which is provided at either end and at the middle with loops, Z, Z. Through the middle loop Z passes the elastic band h, while through the loops Z, Z at the extremities pass the ends of the straps lo, lc. i
I do not confine myself to the use of the rubber band h, as shown in the drawings or as above described. Springs of vario us forms may be substituted and with little change in construction.
The operation of the device is believed to be obvious. The bridle is put on in the ordinary manner. The chin strap lo is made to flt against the chin of the horse, when the check is connected with the water hook, and is maintained in this position by means of the loops e which hold it up in a position nearly horizontal. Whenever any strain is brought upon -the head of the horse by going up an ascent or otherwise, the strain upon the checkrein is relieved as is apparent, by means of the elastic material h which allows the straps lo, 7o to separate, as shown in Fig. 3 thus practically lengthening the check rein several inches. When the strain has ceased the elastic of course, draws the straps 7c, 7c back into their normal position. l
By the useof my device, not only is the check rein made elastic, but the necessity for a check bit to which the check rein is usually attached, is avoided.
In a harness bridle, the combination of the cheek strap andv bit, a bifurcated overhead check rein and an elastic chin strap consisting of a central pad provided at each end with loops through which pass straps, the outer ends of which are connected with the ends of the check rein, while their inner ends are connected by elastic material whereby a limited amount of extensibility is given said chin strap, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of July, A. D. 1894..
