CH ECK-BIT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,634, dated May 24, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LESTER O. SWIFT, of Plano, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Check-Bit, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in check-bits for horses; and the object of my invention is to produce a double check-bit having the two bits connected so as to be held in a fixed position in relation to each other, which hit is adapted to prevent the horse from hogging on the check, and it is also adapted to prevent tongue-lolling and stumbling.

To this end my invention consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and claimed. I

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the bit to a horse; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the bit, showing the manner in which the connecting-straps are secured thereto.

The check-bit consists of two connected bits, the main bit being substantially the common bar-bit and having rings 11 at the ends, to which the strap 12 is secured, the strap passing over the horses nose moderately tight, so as to hold the bit 10 securely in position. At the center of the strap 12 is secured another strap 13, which extends upward between the horses earsand is fastened to the crownpiece 13 of the bridle.

The bit 10 is adapted to rest in the upper part of the horses mouth, audit connects with a flat metallic strip 15, which is formed atthe upper end into a ring 16 to embrace the bit, and the strip is firmly secured to a smaller bit 17, which is arranged parallel with the bit 10, as best shown in Fig. 2.

The strip is secured loosely to the bit 10 so as to permit the latter to turn freely, and is adapted to rest upon the tongue of the horse, the strip extending forward in the horses mouth beyond the smaller bit 17. At the outer end the strip 15 is turned up and rounded smoothly at 15so as to guard against injuring the tongue or mouth of the horse. The bit 17 has a ring 18 at the ends, to which the forked ends 19 of the strap 19 are attached, the strap extending upward through the bridle-top and backward to the saddle and being substantially like the ordinary overdraw-checkrein.

The bit is used as a check-bit andis not connected in any way with the drawing bit or lines.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A check-bit comprising the upper and lower bits and a strip having an eye loosely embracing the upper bit and extending therefrom across the lower bit and rigidly secured thereto, and the bit-rings, substantially as set forth.
