JACQUES MEYER, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
DEVICE TO PREVENT HORSES FROM CRIBBING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,878, dated December 24, 1889. Application filed July 10, 1889. Serial No. 317,085. (No model.) Patented in France May 26, 1887, No. 180,838-
To aZZ whom it may cOnceWt:
Be it known that I, JACQUES MEYER, of Paris, France, have invented a new and Improved Device for Preventing Horses from Cribbing, (for which I have received Letters Patent of the Republic of France, dated May 20, 1887, No. 180,838,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which will prevent horses from cribbing; and to the end named the invention consists, essentially, of an expansible yoke that is formed with bearing-faces, a strap arranged for connection with the yoke ends,
and a means for connecting the strap with the head-piece of a halter, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the vlews. I
Figure 1 is a face view of my improved device for preventing horses from cribbing.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the yoke, parts being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a View of the strap by which the yoke ends are connected.
In the drawings, 10 represents a yoke formed with bearing-faces a, and preferably made of vulcanized rubber, the yoke-section at the point marked 1) being soft and yielding, the other section, of the yoke being rigid. To the outer faces of the yoke ends I secure buckles 11, and these buckles are engaged by the ends of astrap 12,which said strap carries a flap or leaf 13, formed with apertures 0, through which the head-piece of the halter is passed.
WVithin the yoke 10, I arrange metallic straps 15 and 15, which meet just beneath the point 6, and near the ends of these straps 15 and 15, I form apertures adapted to receive rings 16, there being as many of these rings 16 as may be deemed desirable.
The apparatus above described is applied by placing the yoke beneath the neck of the horse, the yoke resting against that portion of the neck that is generally borne upon by the throat-latch, the apparatus being held in place by the head-strap of the halter, which head-strap is passed through the apertures c of the flap or leaf 13. Then when the horse throws his head forward the strap 12 will be drawn upon, and the yoke will bend to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus bringing considerable pressure to bear upon the wind-pipe and causing the horse to raise his head, as will be readily understood.
Any proper flexible connection between the yoke-horns might be employed; but in prac-' tice I prefer that the yoke-horns should be so vulcanized that they will be practically rigid, While the vulcanization of the yoke-section adjacent to the point 19 will be such that that section will be yielding.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a yoke 10, the horns of which are of hard rubber and provided with the bearing-faces a,.and the flexible portion 1?, of soft rubber, connecting the horns, of a strap connected to the free ends of the horns, as and forthe purpose described.
2. The combination, with a yoke proper, of metallic straps embedded therein, formed with apertured ends, rings which pass through the apertures formed in the metallic straps, and a strap by which the yoke ends are connected, substantially as shown and described.
JACQUES MEYER.
