COW-POKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHAN P. SWANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fletcher, in the county of Comanche, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow-Pokes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in animal pokes and more particularly to such as are designed to prevent breachy cattle from jumping or forcing their way through fences and the object of my invention is to provide an animal poke which includes a halter together with a device adapted to engage with the fence in such a manner as to prevent the cattle from either jumping over or pushing through the same.

A further object of my invention is to provide a poke having but few parts and those parts simply constructed and one 1n which the smallest number of straps possible is used, thus increasing the strength and lengthening the life of the poke.

With these and other objects in view, my poke consists primarily. of a nose loop, a head plate, a face plate connecting the two and provided with an upward extension terminating in an outwardly extending hook, diagonal brace members secured between said nose loop and head plate, said parts being formed entirely of metal, flexible connecting means between the rear portion of the nose loop and the rear portion of the head plate, and a hook swingingly connected to the rear of the nose loop.

Referring more specifically to the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my device, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention showing it as applied to the head of a cow. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section through the line 33 of Fig. 2.

Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, 1 designates in general the nose loop of the poke, which is shown as rectangular in shape, but which may be constructed in any desired shape as a circle or an ellipse, and which is preferably formed of a single piece of metal having its ends welded together to Specification of Letters Patent.

. erably formed of metal, is secured the transverse member 6, which is also formed of metal and which forms the support for the head plate 7. The upper portion of the face plate is extended for a considerable distance above the head plate and bifurcated and turned forward at its ends to form the diverging hooks 8.

Referring back to the transverse member 6 it will be seen to consist of a U-shaped strip of metal, the base of which rests against the forehead of the cow and the sides of which extend backward toward the ears, thus preventing lateral movement of the poke. Brace rods 9 and 10 also formed of metal connect the rear side portions of the nose loop with the ends of the member 6.

The head plate proper consists of a piece of sheet metal substantially rectangular in shape and secured by one edge to the central portion of the transverse member 6. This head plate 7 curves upwardly, rearwardly and then downwardly in such a manner as to adapt it to fit over the enlarged portion of the head of a cow formed by the base of the horns, said plate being so proportioned as to lie between the horns with its rear edge resting against the base of the head. In order to prevent any discomfort which might be caused the animal by chafing of the head plate I prefer to provide a lin' ing 11 preferably formed of sole leather, and secured to the rear edge of the head plate and lining is a loop 12 which carries a ring 13 the purpose of which will be here inafter explained. Thus far with the exception of the lining of the head plate the poke has been composed entirely of metal, thus rendering it strong and durable.

Secured near either side of the rear portion of the nose loop 1 by means of rivets or any preferred means are the throat straps 14 and 15 which are crossed beneath the neck as at 16 and secured to each other by a rivet, stitching or other preferred means. Secured to said straps and at a distance from the free ends are the buckles l7 and 18 and slidable upon the straps intermediate their free ends and said buckles are the snap hooks 19 and 20, the ends of the straps being folded back and engaged by the buckles, thus formprising a rigid nose loop, a rigid face plate 30 secured by its lower end to the forward side ing a ready means for adjusting the length of the straps.

In operation the nose loop of the poke is placed around the nose of the animal and the head plate is brought to bear upon the head of the animal, when the neck straps are brought up one upon either side of the neck and secured to the rear of the head piece by means of the snap hooks and the ring 13. It Will be seen from the above that in any attempt made by the animal to force its Way through the fence the hooks 8 Will become entangled and prevent its further progress. As an added precaution and to prevent the animal from jumping the fence I provide a hook 21 Which is swingingly connected by a short chain 22 to the center of the rear portion of the nose loop 1.

It Will be seen from the above that I have constructed a poke composed almost entirely of metal, simple in construction and much easier to apply than the customary forms Which are generally composed almost entirely of straps, Webbing or other flexible material and Which are therefore shapeless When removed from the animal.

What I claim is A device of the character described, comof said nose loop, a rigid transverse member secured to said face plate lntermeoliate its ends, the ends of said transverse member being curved rearwardly to engage against 35 secured by one end to the rear portion of the nose loop and provided at the other end with means for engaging Wltll the rear edge of the head plate, said means consisting of a snap hook adjustably secured to the free ends of said flexible straps and adapted to engage With the ring of the head plate.
