Description

(No Model.)
, T.M.HELM. GALF WEANBR' AND UDDER PROTECTOR. No. 455,618; Patented July 7-, 1891.
n4: NORRIS PETERS co., mam-myu, wAsmuc-Tuu, o. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M.'1-IELM,or MILFORD, MISSOURI.
CALF-WEANER AND U DDER-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,618, dated July 7, 1891.
' Application filed January 3, 1891. Serial No. 376,619. (No model.)
To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS M. HELM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milford, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Veaners and Udder-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in calf-weaners and udder-protectors for cows.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side view showing myimprovelnentapplied. Fig. 2is a perspective view showing the device detached. v
The device is intended to be secured to a cow, as shown in 1 of the drawings; and it consists of a main strap A, provided with a buckle a and ring a, to which is secured at its lower end a bag or pouch B, preferably made up of fabric, said bag or pouch being of such size that it will inclose the udder. To the main strap A are connected straps O C, connected to each other at the point 0, and below said connecting-point extend straps (Z (Z, which connect with the strap A. The lower ends of the straps O are provided with buckles engaged by short straps 0', connected to the rear end of the pouch. 'lhe pouch is also provided with a snap-hook E for engagement with a ring a.
When it is desired to apply this device to a c0W,-the main strap A is passed around the body in front of the udder, and the strap 0 will then be positioned as shown, the short adjusting-straps C passing up between the legs of the animal. \Vhen the snap is inengagement with the ring and the straps properly adjusted, the pouch will be held so as to inclose the udder and protect the same either from the calf or insects, and when it is desired to have access to the udder the snaphook can be released and the pouch moved to one side. It will be noted that the length of the upper edge of the pouch where the snaphook is connected is much longer than the opposite side.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been-proposed to provide a pouch with straps for attaching the same to a cows body, so as to protect the udder, as will more fully appear by reference to the patent to M. R. Dowlin, dated December 18,1877, and I do not therefore claim what is shown therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a pouch B, having attached to one side thereof a snap-hook E and adjacent to the opposite side of the pouch a strap A and straps C C, the strap A having a ring with which the snap-hook engages,
longer side for engagement with the ring a,
and buckles, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TH MAS M. HELM.
