To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, WILLIAM FRIEDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ponchatoula, in the parish of Tangipahoa and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Bitless Safety- Bridle; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in bitless bridles, and it consists in the peculiar construction, certain novel combinations and the adaptation of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed outin the claims appended.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l, is a view showing my improved bridle in position upon a horses head.A Fig. 2, is an en larged perspective view of the bridle removed, and Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of the bridle with the nostril springs thrown out from the nose band.

In the said drawings, similar letters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, referring to which:

A, indicates the nose band of my improved bridle which preferably comprises an outer leather strap a, and an inner piece of metal b, which is so connected to the strap a, as to form a space for the reception of the rein straps B.

C, indicates the nostril springs of my improved bridle, which are connected at their rear ends to the inner metallic piece b, of the nose band as indicated by D, and are curved slightly inward so that when their forward ends are drawn rearwardly as presently de-V scribed, they will bow or expand inwardly and will exert a pressure upon the nostrils of the animal. The forward ends of these springs C, take loosely through slots formed in the piece b, of the nose band adjacent to the middle thereof, and are connected by rivets E, or otherwise, to the forward ends of the rein straps B, which rest and are adapted to move between the pieces a., and b, of the baud as before described. The nostril springs C, normally lie close against the band A, and the forward ends of the rein straps B, abut or rest adjacent to each other, whereby it will be seen that when the driving reins which are connected to the straps B, are drawn taut the rein straps will be drawn rearwardly together with the forward ends of the nostril springs, when said nostril springs will be bowed or curved inwardly from the band A, so as to press against the nostrils of the animal and cut off its supply of air.

Suitably connected to the ends of the nose band are straps F, which are designed and adapted to fasten the nose band in position and are also adapted to serve in conjunction withsaid band to prevent the animal from opening his mouth when the springs C, are applied. l

In practice the nose band A, is connected to any approved head stall which may be placed upon a horses head in the usual manner.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a highly efficient, bitless bridle of an exceedingly cheap and simple construction and one which will normally be very comfortable to the animal.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a bitless bridle, substantially as'specilied, the combination with the nose band, and springs fxedly connected at their rear ends to the inside of the nose band and having their forward ends passed loosely through slots in the inner section or pieces of the nose band; of the straps B, arranged loosely within the nose band and having their forward ends connected to the forward ends of the springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. Ina bitless bridle, substantially as specified, the combination with the nose band, thesprings iixedly connected at their rear ends to the inside of the nose band, and having their forward ends passed loosely through slots in the inner section or piece of the nose band, and the straps B, arranged loosely within the nose band and having their forward ends connected to the forward ends of the springs; of the straps F, adapted to secure the nose band in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
