Description

PHARTMAN. Combined HorseOolla-r and Hame.
. ATTORNEYS WITNESSES W @M UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRANKLIN HARTMAN, OF FLOWERFIELD, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HORSE-COLLAR AND HAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent llo. 217,099, dated J nly 1, 1879; application filed April 28, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN HARTMAN, of Flowerfield, in the county of St. Joseph, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Horse-Oollarand Hames; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined horse-collar and hames, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. r
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l, is a front view of my combined horse-collar and hames. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the bottom of the collar.
The horse-collar is made in two separate pieces, A A, notjoined permanently together at the bottom. At the top it is fastened by a strap and buckles, B, in any of the known and usual Ways. Y
O G are the hames, having their lower ends overlapping each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and cased with leather D, so that the ends of the hames cannot be seen until drawn apart.
F is the hame-strap, which holds the hames and collar together while in use, said strap being fastened in rings a a on the hames.
The leather of each side A of the collar is tacked to the respective hame from the inside before the collar is stuffed, and then being stuffed, a part of the leather forming the collar is tightly drawn from the inside over the hames, and securely tacked or otherwise fastened to the top of the hames.
The overlapping ends of the hames are con nected by two or more notches, b,in one, and a spring-catch, d, on the other taking into either of said notches, the object being to vary the width of the collar as required. The spring-catch d has an arm, I, passing through the hame, as shown in Fig. 2, and the end of this arm is formed with a loop, h, through which the hame-strap F is passed.
In the oifset ofone of the hames is a screw, i, which, when the collar is to be widened, is run out the required distance, and thus form a stop for the end of the other hame.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the bisected eollarA A, the hames G 0, having overlapping lower ends, with notches b and spring-catch (Z, the arm I, with loop h, and the. hame-strap F, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In .testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, 1879.
FRANKLIN HARTMAN.
