Description

E. KING.- HAME'TUG.
(No Model.)
PatentiedApr. 15, 1890. j
dilorizey frhf fmw WILLIAM E. KING, OF ST.
PATENT OFFICE.
REeIs FALLS, NEW YORK.-
HAME-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,678, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed January 1'7, 1890. Serial No. 337,217 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
'Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Regis Falls, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Tugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hame-tugs; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a top or edge view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the castings. Fig. etis a longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a side view. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the other casting.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A A designate two castings, preferably of malleable iron, and are constructed in peculiar shape. These castings are curved outward, as shown in the annexed drawings, and have an opening or eye 19,110 receive the thimble or sleeve, through which passes the bolt in connecting said tug to a hame. outer casting A, as well as the inner casting A, is provided with lugs j on their faces, which lugs meet when the two plates or castings are joined together. The plate A is cut away, as at is, leaving upper and lower hook-shaped portions Z l, which are designed to interlock with the upper and lower cut away portions on either side of the tongue on the casting A. This inner casting or plate A is provided with a central curved tongue, which is hook-shaped, as at .m, which corresponds in shape with the cutaway portion of the opposite plate and fits the same snugly when the two plates are joined together. These parts and the inner lugs form an eye 19, to receive the thimble or sleeve n, and by the peculiar construction of these two plates or castings the same are interlocked by the hooked and tongue portions and held firmly The in position by the transverse screw in the bosses of said plates. These castings are provided with parallel plates 0 c, which have on their inner faces circular bosses d d, which are transversely perforated to receive a screwbolt 6, and said perforations extend entirely through the bosses and plates. The perforation in the boss (1' is female screw-threaded to receive the screw end of said bolt 6.
B is a plate, which is secured to the trace f, having a shoulder g, against which said trace abuts, and an eye his formed in the end thereof, and having shoulders 11 t', in which play the rounded ends of the two parallel plates aforesaid. This eye fits neatly upon the bosses in the space between the parallel plates and presents a hinged joint between said trace and casting, whereby a vertical play is' given the trace, whether the line of draft be high or low. The strain upon the hame bolt or staple is always straight, as the hinged joint permits adjustability between the parts.
The circular bosses aforesaid are made sufficiently large in order to increase the wearing-surface of this joint, and thetendency to wear out is materially lessened. Thecastings when brought together permit the bosses to abut and form a wearing or hinged joint between said castings for the trace, and by such construction all liability of breaking or bending the eyes of a hame or breaking the hame bolt or tug is obviated, and by the outward curve of these castings it throws the wear of the tug away from the collar, thereby pre venting injury to the latter.
It will be seen from the foregoing description and by reference to the annexed drawings that the trace has a vertical as well as a horizontal play, and when the trace and hame are hung up the trace assumes a vertical position, thus relieving it from the awkward and rigid position, as per harness now in use, and the curved castings also prevent chafing or gallin g a horse. The transverse bolt or screw, passing through the parallel plates and bosses, serves to keep the hinge part from spreading, the strain being on the bosses, and that my invention can be adjusted to a bolt-hame without removing the bolt or thimble, which is accomplished simply by removing the screw in the bosses, when the two sections will read-.
ily separate, leaving the thimble on the bolt on the hame, and this device can be attached to hames having either a bolt or staple fastening, and a tug, as herein shown and described, is durable, ornamental, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. In a hame-tug, outwardly-curved plates provided with bosses or bearings d d, transversely-perforated lugs j jjj on their inner faces, one of which plates is formed with upper and lowerhookedinterlockingportionsandout away centrally, the opposite plate being provided with the hook or curved tongue adapted to said cut-away portion of the other plate,
all substantially as specified.
2. In a hame-tug, the hinge-connection consisting of the plates A A, curved outward and having the eye 12 to receive a thimble, a bolt, or staple, the plate A having the cut-away portion 7a, hooks Z Z, plate A having the upper and lower cut-away portions 0 0 and hook m, the. lugs j j, and having inwardly-project- 25 ing bosses forming wearing-surfaces, and the plate attached to the trace and provided with the eye adapted to engage said bosses, whereby a hinged joint is formed between the plates, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3o
3. In a hame-tug, the combination, with the curved castings composed of the two sections having the parallel plates provided with the bosses transversely perforated, and lugs, said plates having rounded ends, of the eye h, 35 having shoulders 75 1', adapted to engage the rounded ends of said plates and attached to the trace, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
