UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIQE.
J. AUGUSTUS FOLSOM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
THlLL-LUG.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 269,84=3, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed October 23, 1832.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. AUGUSTUS FOLSOM,
of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Lugs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, convenient, and durable metallic thill-lug, which shallovercome many of the objections existing in this class of thill-lugs heretofore constructed and now in use; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of its several parts, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings are shown a thill-lug constructed according to my invention.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a thill-lug embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 represent details of the lug disconnected.
A represents the thill-loop or main portion of the lug, the upper end of which is brought near to a point and'rounded over, and provided with a slot, 13, to receive the buckletongue 0, which is attached thereto by the screw bolt or pivot D, which may be provided with a slot in its head end to be turned by a screw-driver, it being provided with a screw upon its opposite end adapted to engage with the opposite side of the buckle-loop E or straploop H; or a screw-threaded nut may be applied thereto.
It will'be seen that the buckle loop E and strap-loop I are disconnected and pivoted to the outer sides or opposite edges of the said thill-lng A, and may be adjusted at different angles with each other; and in order to prevent wear, and consequently rattling, of the lug-loop A and buckle-loop E, I have provided the socket at the upper end of the lug-loop with an enlarged hole or opening and fitted therein at each side of the buckle-tongue eye a series of leather washers, H, which are provided with a central hole to fit the pivot or bolt D, and extend at each side slightly be- (No model.) i
yond the outer faces of the upper end of the lug-loop, so as to form a bearing for the lower ends of the buckle-loop, and thereby prevent all wear or rattling of those parts, yet allow a free movement of the same.
I provide a loop, P, at the lower end of the log to which may be secured a breast-strap. This loop VP may be secured by'casting the metal of the lug around one side or the bar thereof, it being lut-ed with sand or clay so as to form a loose joint or pivot therewith; or, if desired, it may be connected thereto pivot-ally by providing a boss, '1, or projection, and then drilling a hole through the same, the loop being open at one side sutficient to pass each side of the said boss T, then bent together, the ends of the loop passing into each side of the hole so as to connect the loop thereto loosely.
Having thus described my invention, '1 claim 1. A metallic thill-lug having a buckle pivoted to the upper end thereof, provided with a pendent loop overhanging the periphery of the said thill-lug, the pivot thereof being provided with a series of leather washers, substantially as described, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A metallic thill-lug having a buckle pivoted to the upper end thereof, and provided with a leather bushing, and having aseparate pivoted pendent loop overhanging the periphcry of the said thill-lug and adjustable thereon, substantially as described, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A metallic thill-lug having a buckle pivoted to the upper end thereof, provided with a pendent loop overhanging the periphery of the thill-lug, the pivot thereof being provided with a series of leather washers, and the lower end of the said thill-lug having cast within a projection, L, the pivoted breast-strap loop P, substantially as shown and described, as andfor the purposes set forth.
