To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J APHET S. .(lUssoN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Dekalb, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Detachable Hame-Clip, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to clips which serve as a connection between the hame and the tug; and the objects of my invention are, first,

- to provide a clip which can be easily detached and replaced by a new one when it becomes worn out; second, to make a strong, durable, and cheap device; third, to prevent the accidental disconnection of the clip from the hame, and other objects to become apparent from the description to follow.

I am aware that detachable clips for connecting the tug to the hame have been made prior to my invention, and I do not, therefore, make claim to such a construction broadly. On the other hand, I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction shown only as is necessary by the prior state of the art.

The construction and use of harnesses are such as to cause a great amount of wear on the clip loop or hook connected to the eye or staple on the hame and causes the clip tov become worn and break often. In a great many cases these clips are made partly of iron and partly of leather, or either. They are connected to the tug in such manner that a person desiring to replace a worn-out clip with a new one must have a number of tools and be somewhat familiar with harness construction and in most cases prefers to go to a harness-shop to have the repair made.

My invention is intended to fulfil the longfelt want of a cheap and durable clip of such simple construction that an ordinary reasonable person can properly disconnect and connect the same without any special tools.

The clip consists of a metal bar or strip provided at one end with a pair of ears or lugs by means of which it is pivotally secured to the tug and an open eye or hook at the other end by means of which it is connected to the hame.

To describe my invention more in detail, I will refer to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a clip made in accordance with my invention connected to a tug. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section I taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a de- Ltail view of the clip detached.

In the drawings, 5 is the tug, only a part ofwhich is shown. The tug is preferably made of metal with itsend 6 doubled back on itself and riveted or secured in any way'to form the loop or eye 7 for the reception of a pin or bolt 8. The pin 8 forms the pivotal or hinged connection betweenthe tug 5 and the clip 9, the clip being provided with perforated lugs or ears 10, through which the pin 8 extends.

The pin 8 is provided with a head 11 to limit its movement in one direction through the ears 10 and loop 7 and when theparts are in proper position the end 12 of the pin 8 is given several sharp blows with a hammer, so as to swage it out and prevent the withdrawal of the pin 8 from the ears 10 and loop 7. When it is desired to disconnect the clip 9 from the tug 5, either the head 8 or the swaged end 12 is removed by cutting or filing and the pin withdrawn from the loop 7 and cars 10.

The end of the clip 9 opposite that end to which the ears 10 are secured is provided with the hook or eye 13, preferably made integral with the clip. This hook 13 is connected to a staple or an eye provided on the hame. (Not shown.) The hook 13 must be so constructed that it can be hooked into the staple or eye on the hame, and to prevent it becoming accidentally disconnected from said staple or eye the free end of the hook 13 is extended out into a long slender tongue 14, the end of which is prevented from being bent away from the clip 9, preferably by being provided with a loop extending about the pin 8.

I desire to be understood not to limit myself by the appended claims to the exact construction shown and described any more than is necessary bythe prior state of the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a detachable hame-clip, a clip provided at one end with perforated lugs and at the remaining end with a hook, a removable pin to pass through said perforation about which said clip is pivoted, and the free end of said hook provided with an extension, to engage said pin, whereby it is secured against movement away from said clip.

2. A clip;pr0vided at one end with perforated lugs and at the other end with a hook, a removable pin to pass through said perforated lugs, and the free end of said hook provided with an extension the end of which normally lies under said pin and is prevented from moving away from said clip.

3. A clip provided at one end with two lugs provided with perforations which are in alinement, a removable pin to pass through said perforations, the other end of said clip provided with an integral hook and the free end of said hook provided with an integral extension the free end of which is provided with a loop extending around said removable pin.

4. In a device of the class described, a tug provided with a perforated lug, a clip provided atone end with two perforated lugs and at its remaining end with a hook provided with a looped extension and a removable pin arranged to pass through the perforation in said tug-lug, the perforations in said clip-lugs and the loop on said hook extension thereby, pivotally, securing said tug, said clip and said hook extension together.

5. In a device of the class described, a tug provided with a loop, a clip provided with perforated lugs at one-end and a hook having a looped extension at the remaining end, and apin for securing said loops and said perforation in axial alinement.
