No. 563,631. Patented July '7, 1896.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES nWILLIAM WTEIGLE, OF MASON CITY, IOVA.
HAM E-TUG CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,631, dated July 7, 1896.
Application filed April 16, 1896.
To @ZZ 1.0711071?, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES WILLIAM W'EIGLE, a citizen of the United States of Am erica, residing at Mason City, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIame-Tug Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make andV use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hame-tug clips; and it consists of a clip made up of malleable iron or dropped forging, so constructed that the draft end of the eye will be of increased thickness, and to also provide inwardly-projecting portions which will embrace the loop or staple of the haine when the device is applied, the projecting members of the cli pbein g attached to the tug in the usual manner, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of a haine-tug clip constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the clip applied, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
A designates the hame-tug clip, which is made up of a single piece of malleable iron or other suitable material constructed to present side members 0, a, connected to each other at their forward ends by a curved portion d', forming a part of the eye ZJ and of increased thickness. The part c is provided with inwardlyprojecting and curved portions ci d2, which form the other part of the eye b when the device is applied, as shown in Fig. 2, and these inwardly-projecting curved portions are of practically the same thickness as the members a, while the portion a is twice the thickness.
In connecting the clip to the staple of the llame one of the members a, is passed through the staple and the clip moved so that the connecting portion of thestaple will pass between the ends of the curved portions a2 into the eye b, after which the members a a are brought against the sides of the hams-tug and riveted or otherwise secured thereto, this latter operation being accomplished by placing the forward end of the clip upon an anvil Serial No. 587,841. (No model.)
and hammering upon the saine to bring the members a into proper position.
It will be noted that the greatest Wear comes upon the part 0,' of the clip, and for this rea son the said part is made of increased thickness, while the portions ai are provided to prevent undue play.
The clip hereinbefore described can be cheaply manufactured, and the particular construction permits of the saine being readily applied to the haine.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to construct a hams-tug clip of a plate of metal which is attached to the hame by being bent around the staple thereof, and I do not claim such construction, broadly, as such hame-tug clips, as far as I am awa-re, are lacking in the curved portions a2, which prevent the possibility of the clip spreading upon the staple.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ism
l. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described haine-tug clip made up of a single piece of malleable metal the greatest thickness of which is at the forward end, said clip having inwardly-proj ecting portions d2, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the haine loops or staples, of the haine-tug clip made up of a single piece of malleable metal constructed to present members d a, connecting portion d of increased thickness forming the forward part of the eye b, and inwardly-curved por tions c2 forming the rear part of said eye, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. A hametug clip made up of asingle piece of malleable metal constructed to present side members a a, projections a2 a2 curved in wardly and connected to a semicircular portion having a greater thickness than the parts c and ai, the parts d and c2 joining the portion a at or rear of the center of the open eye, the eye being adapted to be closed upon the loop or staple so as to encircle a greater portion of the same, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES VILLIAM IVEIGLE. lVitnesses W. A. HICKS, C. T. DIKE.
