HAME-TUG.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUIS G. GUSTAVEL, of Monticello, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Tugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention is an improvement in hame tugs, and its object is to improve the construction of the tug, and to provide therefor improved back-band loops and trace-loops, so that such loops of different sizes can be employed with the same tug, and can be readily applied thereto or removed therefrom, so that different sized traces and straps may be fitted to the tug, or if the loops be broken they can be readily replaced without loss of time at a trifling expense by anyone.

Another object of the invention is to make the trace loop serve as a keeper to prevent the back-band loop dropping or working out of place. i

The invention is especially design ed for use with tugs provided with a series of eyes for the engagement of hooks on the trace, but the particular form of hook and eye does not constitute part of the present invention, and

is not herein claimed. '1 have shown one form of hook and eye in the drawings for conventional illustration of other parts of the device.

In the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective inside view of a tug strap illustrating part of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a back view of part of the tug, with the backband loop and trace loop attached thereto.

. The tug A may be made of cast or wrought metal and has a longitudinal slot B near its rear end where the back-band loop is to be attached. This slot has an enlargement or T near its rear end as indicated at b. The back-band loop 0 resembles an ordinary double loop and lies transversely of the tug as usual; it has on its under side however two depending lugs D, and d, the forward one of which is slightly longer than the other. These lugs are in line and at center of the back-band loop and are slightly lessin width than slot B but have T heads as shown on their outer ends, wider than slot B but narrower than portion 1) of the slot, so that the back-band loop can be secured to the tug by slipping lugs D, d, in succession through enlargement 1) into slot B. When the back-band loop is thus in the slot, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the T heads of the lugs prevent it disengaging the tug, but at the same time permit it to shift, or be shifted, longitudi- G nally of the tug, in slot B. One lug could be used-instead of two, or lugs D, 01, may be made in one if desired. The walls of slot B'adjoining enlargement b may be thinned down on the inner side as at b to facilitate the insertion of thelugsinto the slot. Opposite the enlargement b of the slot, a short aperture E is made in the tug, separated from enlargement b by a cross piece e, and corresponding in width with said enlargement.

F designates the trace loop, of ordinary appearance except that it has a hook f attached to one side of its inner cross piece at center thereof, and which is adapted to be inserted in aperture E, and hooked under piece e, the end of hook f rising through enlargement b of slot B as indicated in the drawings. The trace loop is thus heldin position on the tug, and when the trace T is passed therethrough, it is impossible to disengage it from the tug unless it is broken.

The hook f however performs another function, as when the trace loop is in place the end'of hook fprojecting through or into enlargement b prevents lug D passing through this enlargement, as there is not room enough for both lugs and hook therein. Consequently the back-band loop is locked on the trace so long as the trace loop is in position-thereon.

It will be readily understood that by providing a set of trace loops of difierent sizes with similar hooks f, one to suit the trace used can be secured to the tug. The same thing is true of the back-band loops. In case of breakage of either loops it is only necessary to slip out the trace and remove the broken loop; it is always necessary however to remove the trace loop. The back-band loop having a free play in slot B permits play or adjustment of the tug and back-band in relation to each other without chafing the skin of the animal. The tug as shown is provided with T shaped slots 15, and the trace has a metallic flanged head or hook U on its end which can be engaged with or removed from a slot if when raised .to a vertical position, but is locked therein when the trace is fiat against the tug.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is

1. The combination of a metallic tug body having a longitudinal slot formed with an enlargement at one end with a removable back-band loop having a pair of T-headed lugs adapted to enter said slot through said enlargement, and adj ustably secure the backband loop to the tug, substantially as de-- scribed.

2. The combination of a tug having a 1ongitudinal slot and an adjustable and detachable back band loop having lugs adapted to enter said slot, with a detachable trace loop secured to the tug in position to prevent the removal of the back band loop, substantially 25 as described.

3. The combination of a tug having a longitudinal slot formed with an enlargement at one end, and a removable back-band loop having lugs adapted to enter said slot through said enlargement; with a trace loop F detachably connected to the tug at the enlarged end of the slot and adapted to prevent the removal of the back-band loop when it is attached to the tug, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a tug having a longitudinal slot B enlarged at one end, and an aperture E separated from the enlargement of the slot by a cross bar; with a back band loop 0 having T-lugs D, d, adapted to enter said slot; and a trace loop, F, having a hook f adapted to engage said cross bar and partly enter the enlargement of the slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
