WILLIAM TIMMINS, OF WILSONVILLE, NEBRASKA.
HAME-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,030, dated May 1, 1894.
Application filed October 27, 1893. Serial No. 489.305. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known' that I, WILLIAM TIMMINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilsonville, in the county of Furnas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful flame-Tug, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in hame-tugs; and the objects in view are to pro- Vide a cheap, simple, and durable construction of hame-tug, the same being so constructed as to be flexible so as to conform tothe contour of the sides of the horse, and readily adjustable as to lengthen and shorten the tug in conformity withv the length of the horse.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hame-tug embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the tug, the tug-strap and trace removed.
Like numerals of reference indicate like part-s in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I employ a tug-V plate 1 of oblong shape, the same having its' opposite edges bent to form flanges 2 outwardly disposed and parallel to each other, the said flanges being connected near their front and rear ends by keepers 3. The bottom of the plate is provided with a seriesof transverse slots 4, whose edges are rounded or flared so as to permit'of a ready entrance. A trace-plate 5 is located at the rear end of the tug-plate 1, has its rear end transversely slotted, as at 6, and-connected to the trace 7, and atits front end is reduced forming a tongue 8, which is passed through the rear transverse slot tof the tug-plate from the rear side thereof and bent over forming a loose connection. The plate 5 is further provided upon its upper side with a keeper 9.
Located within the tug-plate 1 and fitting loosely between the flanges 2 thereof is an adjusting plate 10, which at its front end is reduced to form atongue11,and at its rear end is inwardly bent toforrn a' tongue or hook 12. This tongue 12 is thickened at 'its wearingportion and removably engages with any one of the aforesaid transverse slots 4 with which i the tug-plate is provided. The adjustingplate 10 near its front end is provided upon its outer side with a keeper 13. The tongue 11 is passed through a slot 14 formed in the rear end of a buckle-plate 15 and bent over the rear end thereof, whereby a flexible or loose connection is formed between the adjustingplate 10 and the buckle-plate 15. It will be understood that these plates 1, 5 and 15 are preferably formed of malleable metal so that they may be readily connected and their tongues bent to form the loose connection.Y
The front end of the buckle-plate 15 is engaged with the rear transverse bar of an ordinarybuckle 16 of any desired construction,-
or it'maybe engaged with thepintle-bar of a buckleforwhichpurpos'e the aforesaid buckleplate is provided adjacent to its front end with a slot orropening 17. The front end of this buckle-plate is bent around the bar so as to loosely engage the same.
The tug-strap 18 terminates at its front end in the eye 19 which is of the usual construction and is designed to engage with the hames. The said eye being in engagement with the haines the'tugis passed through the buckle its perforations being engaged by the stud or tong-ue of the same, whichever may be employed, and the remaining portion of the tug passed under the keepers 3-3, 9, and 13.
To the rear side of the tug-strap 18 the plate 2 and the plate 5 I rivet at 20a leather guard 2l, which produces a smooth surface adjacent to the horse.
It will be seen that the tug is flexible by reason of thejoints produced therein and may conform to the exterior of the horse, being comfortable, and at the same time that the finish of the same is such as to render it ornamental. The device being formed of metal is of course devoid of stitches, and hence great durability results. It will be observed that the vtug-strap is adjustable in the buckle and of course thev trace thereby lengthened, and I secure an increased adj ustability by reason of the adjustable connection between the plate 1 and the plate 10. When these plates are connected the tug-strap lying in the keepersprevents a disconnection, retaining the parts together. By reason of the flexible joint between the front end of the plate 10 and the buckle-plate 15 it will be seenthat the tug- IOO strap may be readily inserted under the keepers 13, and on through the remaining keepers, 3-3 and 9.
Having described my invention, What I claim is- 1. In a hanne-tug, the combination of a tug plate having transverse keepers and provided with a series of transverse slots, and the trace and adjusting plates located respectively at the rear and front ends of the tug plate, and provided at their outer ends with transverse keepers, and having at their inner ends hooks detachably engaging slots of the tug plate, substantially as described.
2. Ina haine-tug, the combination with the tug-plate having the opposite side flanges and its bottom provided with a series of trans verse slots, the trace-plate slotted at its rear end to engage with the trace and having its front end reduced and bent to form a tongue engaging the rear slot of the tug-plate, of the adjustable-plate arranged in the tug-plate and terminating at its front end in a reduced tongue and at its rear end bent to form a tongue for engaging the slots in the tug-plate keepers formed on the tug, trace and adjustable plates, a buckle-plate bent to engage a buckle and havingits rear end slotted to engage the tongue of the adjustable plate, the
buckle arranged in the front bent end .of the buckle-plate, the tug-strap terminating at its front end in an eye engaged with the buckle and passing under the several keepers of the several plates, the guard at the inner side of the tug and secured to the tug-strap, traceplate and tug-plate, and the trace engaging the rear end of the trace-plate, substantially as specified.
3. In a llame-tug, the tug-plate 1 having transverse keepers 3, and provided with a series of transverse slots L Whose edges are rounded or ilared, combined with the traceplate 5 located at the rear end of the tug-plate and engaging With one of the slots thereof and provided with keeper 9 and tongue 8, and an adjusting plate lO provided with a keeper 13 and tongues 1l. and 12, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM TIM MINS.
