TRACE-CARRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,679, dated March 23, 1886.

Application filed December 31, 1885. Serial No. 187,232. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, SAMUEL SWENGEL and WILLARD E. SWENGEL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Oakland, in the county of Burt and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Tugs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to trace-supporters for harness; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter described and set forth.

Figure l is a perspective view showing our improved trace-supporter attached to a harness, and Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view.

A represents the saddle; B, the saddle-skirt; G, the belly-band billet, and D the trace-supporter. This trace-supporter is made of a straight piece of any suitable malleable metal, which is bent upon itself so as to form a loop, d, which is passed over one end of a buckle, said strap being cut away, as shown at (1, so as to provide an opening through which the tongue of the buckle E may pass. This buckle E is adapted to engage with a strap, B, which is attached to the saddle by means of a suitable screw, said strap also being provided with perforations, so that the trace-supporter can be adjusted thereon. In the outer portion of the metallic band or strap is formed a loop, F, having straight outwardly-projecting top and bottom pieces, and a front portion, which is parallel with the main portion of the strap, thus providing a loop which is substantially rectangular in cross-section, or of the usual shape of the trace which is adapted to pass through the same. The metallic strap which forms theloop is made of a single piece of malleable metal. Said piece after being bent to form the loop F, and the loop d are secured to each other by rivets e e, the loop portions or ends being attached to each other by the rivets e, which pass through the end portions and through the end of the strap 0, which connects the same with the belly-band O.

A trace-supporter constructed as hereinbefore described will be slightly flexible, so as to bend to the shape of the body of the horse, and it may be adjusted upon the saddle and belly-band, so as to be on a line with the hame and whiffletree, thus, besides serving as a support for the trace, it will also prevent the trace chafing the saddle-skirt or sides of the horse.

The. metallic trace-supporter D has rigidly attached thereto a piece of leather, G, which is of greater width than said supporter. The upper end of this piece of leather is reduced in width, so that the same may be passed through the buckle E, from whence it is bent downand secured to the trace-supporter so that its end will lie adjacent to the loop F. A keeper, 9, is attached to the piece of leath or G, between the loop F and the buckle B, said keeper serving to hold in place the end of the strap B.

The saddle-skirt Bis provided nearits lower end with a keeper, 9, through which the loop end of the metallic trace support may be passed.

\Ve claim The improved trace-supporter herein described, made of a single piece or band of malleable metal and provided with aloop, the aperture orpassage through which is at right angles to the body of the said piece or band, and through which the trace may pass, said strap being bent upon itself so as to form a loop for the attachment of a buckle, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
